if I use points to upgrade a 35K cert., if cancel the stay, I assume that the extra points will go back into my account?

If you cancel within the cancellation period, you get the cert back and the points back.

Have a phone rep help you cancel. Then ask the rep if they can see that your cert and points are back. (I know from experience that phone reps see my points balance adjusting well before I can see that on the Bonvoy website.)

I've seen anecdotal reports of certificates not reappearing in your account when a reservation is canceled.

Marriott IT is awful. Yesterday I tried to make a 30K points reservation. I had one 35K certificate in my account, but the Bonvoy website did not offer me the option to apply my cert. (I was using Microsoft Edge. I know that Brave sometimes has problems with the Marriott website.) I had to phone. The phone rep got it done for me (on her second attempt).

I recently found that certificates can only be used for redemption rate but not for redemption with points or cash upgrade.

35K points certificate can be used with 6K points :

Certificate can't be used:

After twice having my Free Night Certificate fail to reappear after I cancelled online...and then having a long conversation with a CSR while they tracked it down and returned it to me...I now always have a CSR do the cancellation for any FNC reservations. The certificate reappears immediately.

Over the past two months I've also had issues with using FNCs online - even on 'standard' rooms that didn't require additional points. So I now call a CSR for that too...

We have cancelled plenty of free night certs + points and the cert and points were returned right away.

I am about 50/50 with certs appearing back correctly. Half of the time they don't reappear, if I simply email about the problem I am told that I don't have any certs and anything cancelled already came back to me. I then have to Nancy Drew it up through various emails showing the dates the cert was used and forwarding cancellation emails, etc and then 7-10 days after that I get my cert back. I am close to 100% with cancelled points immediately returning to my account.
