It's been 3 years now and planning on return trip for 2026. We own at Marriott's Maui Ocean Club – Molokai, Maui, and Lanai Towers and wonder how the construction is coming? It seems like part of the construction is putting in a full kitchen is this correct? Also we saw this on the website:

please be aware that the Hawaii Electric Company has notified us of periodic power outages that may impact our resort from time to time. These outages are part of the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) strategy that is being implemented across the island to proactively shutoff power to help prevent wildfires when certain conditions exist. The Hawaii Electric Company expects these precautions to remain in place on the Maui, Oahu, and Hawaii Islands for the foreseeable future.

Are you seeing the power being shut off much?

Thanks for any updates...

Here is a recent thread discussing construction;

Construction will be ongoing for the rest of the year. Electrical project is done. Plumbing project and unit refresh underway.

No full kitchen is being added. The current project involves complete bathroom renovations due to the need to replace the plumbing line infrastructure, plus new furniture, flooring, window coverings, and soft goods. No changes at all to kitchen, cabinets, and appliances. Those are on a different refresh schedule. Main bath gets a walk in shower.

…and on the power shutoff notification, I suspect that’s just a CYA since Hawaii Electric has the right to shutoff power at any time to mitigate wildfire risk if it’s very dry and very windy. I suspect it is very rare that those conditions exist.

I was kinda worried about that, thinking we were going to be going to a third world country next month when we go to Hawaii. Good to know that it is rare.

All I know for sure is we had power 100% of the time back in late January. I have no specific knowledge that shutoff is indeed rare, but I do know the purpose of the power shutoffs are to mitigate wildfire risks, and the conditions that would usually trigger that probably don’t happen all that often.

Yeah, kind of like the Third World of California. PSPSs have been the norm for over a decade here.

We haven't had any in 2+ yrs or so in the Bay Area. 3+ yrs or so ago, I guess, PGE went wild flexing their muscles with them, after the deadly fires that were caused by PGE lack of maintenance. SHTF and PGE backed way off. What really changed?
PGE started cutting down the trees that were right next to power lines, esp the DEAD trees. They should have done that years before as everyone outside CA knew. For a few yrs, there were tree-cutting trucks (you know, those long ones with the big grinder towed off the back) everywhere. There were so many tree-cutting trucks that they were tearing up the road and causing traffic jams because they all drive so slowly.
Next, they added 1000s of sensors to the, well maybe right on the lines, to shut down specific lines if they sense a ... I assume measuring a sharp drop in voltage which indicates a short-circuit.
Next, they began putting some lines underground.
Now, PGE even has commercials on amzn prime video explaining all of the above in a folksy style with a PGE exec chatting with an unhappy customer. Kind of a "Don't Worry. Be Happy" ad.
I am sure the PSPS rule still exists, but PGE & its regulators decided to just get their bleep together instead of relying on that.

In San Diego they are still happening, especially in the rural backcountry. Unfortunately our circuit ties into a very wildland area almost 10 miles from us, so we get shut down more often that our conditions warrant. Hopefully Maui Power is vigilant and doing PSPS when necessary.

They still happen occasionally in San Jose but mostly in the more rural or hilly parts. Fortunately, it's been a few years since we had one at our house. We are adjacent to a part of San Jose with hills and farmland, and I see people in that area complain on Nextdoor with some regularity.

As WakikiFirst mentioned, PG&E trimmed a lot of trees in the area, and the sensors are on most of the power lines in my area.

I agree with Jim that it is probably just a notice that Hawaii Electric has a policy for this now, though I don't recall seeing a notice like that for any of the hotels or timeshares I have stayed at in California.

Thanks much for all of the good updates. Glad to hear that power is not been up and down, I agree its more of cover their backsides.... For some reason I thought full kitchens were going in and remove the middle bathroom....That might of just been a rumor too.....

We stayed at the Maui Ocean Club last week in the Molokai tower; they are still working on the Lanai tower. We have been owners for 24 years and I'm very impressed with how much they have updated. I really did not expect to see so many good upgrades! I'm glad they didn't but in a full kitchen because we use both bathrooms and they left the tub in the living room bathroom which my husband likes. We always barbecue and have never felt the need for a full kitchen. I really like all the new colors and the floors. Everything was working.
