We are flying to Italy with our granddaughter in April. We have booked economy seats and have requested upgrades to premium economy using points. I called United yesterday (about 3 months out from our travel date) and asked about the status of our upgrade. They said that we are numbers 5,6 and 7 on the upgrade list but we won’t find out until just before our trip. Does anyone have any sense for what our chances for getting the upgrade might be?

At this point, no one knows. It will depend on what status you have with United and how full the plane is, which you can't know this early. As gold, I haven't seen an upgrade in years unless I pay for it.

It seems they are willing to pay for the upgrade with points. This isn't a last minute upgrade process done by the gate agent but rather some system that United has to upgrade fliers before day of departure.

@ Luvtoride: Are you talking about plus points or miles?
@ dioxide45: Even if you upgrade with either, you can be waitlisted until boarding begins; there's no guarantee the upgrade will go through. I've upgraded with miles, but the upgrade didn't happen.

I’m currently Premier Silver. I’m looking to upgrade using Miles for the seats, not a Complimentary upgrade.
Yes, I figured its too early to know, but I was surprised when they said my request was number 5,6 &7 for upgrade. Just wondering if anyone has gotten a “placement” number like that before being able to upgrade or not.
Thanks.

Have you looked at the seat map for your flight to see how many Premium Economy seats are still open? I am also Silver, but have also just gone ahead and paid for the Economy Plus seats since I'm never sure if I'll get the upgrade. I also go on an upgrade list for First Class, but have only gotten than upgrade once, and that was when everyone was bailing on the flight I was on since it had been so delayed.

I have never checked to see where I am in the list. However for the first class upgrades I can go online day of and see what position I'm in.

I'd guess the issue is that they'll try to get people to pay cash to upgrade right up til departure. Then they give up and take miles. Cash: the universal lubricant

Yes, last month my wife and I flew United to Mexico. I approached the gate personnel a few minutes before boarding as it appeared there were several Premium economy ROWS open on the flight. Online it was a cost of over $100 to upgrade. When I asked she said she would upgrade us at no cost due to our silver premier status. We had a whole row in Premium Economy. I got her name to make sure I mentioned her on a survey I knew I would receive. A win-win for both of us!
