Umbrellas on Beach at MOK

Is this an issue? I was looking at another forum and a couple people seemed to think Umbrellas at the lagoon were a no-no. That can't be right.... ?>
 
Ko Olina lagoons

If you are referring to Ko Olina, they will not allow any umbrellas at the beach of the lagoons.

If you want any shade, you have to rent a beach cabana.

I have seen security make people take umbrellas down on several occasions.

Seems crazy to me. Anyone know why?
 
When I was there in June, they had roped the beach into thirds. First third you could rent umbrellas, middle third was considered Marriott property, and the last third was public without rentals. Why can't you put up an umbrella on the public portion?
 
That's pretty sad. Either you pay a lot of money or you and your children will burn. I find that amazing.
 
Hawaii beaches are public

All beaches in Hawaii are public, so they can't tell you to take down an umbrella. Even the roping off part seems questionable ( I did see that in May), but if no one calls them on it, then it becomes the norm.

Did you ever notice that the hotels on the beach in Waikiki have people packed into their area that don't have hotel towels? They can't stop public access.
 
I think perhaps the issue with Ko'Olina beaches is that it is a safety issue. These are man made beaches. Perhaps they don't have a good sand base? Meaning putting an umbrella in the sand would not go down very far and would easily be blown away, perhaps hitting and injuring someone. This seems to have been a long standing policy, perhaps as far back as the property being built.
 
It's not Marriott Security that makes you take them down. It's the Ko Olina Resort police. They come zooming up in their golf carts at any of the lagoons and make people take down their umbrellas. Has nothing to do with Marriott.

Ko Olina retains responsibility for policing the beaches. I guess they get to make the rules regardless of the Hawaiian beach policy. I know that Oahu wants to assume control and Ko Olina is fighting it to prevent homeless from homesteading. That might be a reason in that no structures on the beach so they are not discriminating.
 
This whole thing with umbrellas is just amazing to me. And yet maybe you can rent them, but you can't use your own? I'm not going to choose a resort to go to based upon an umbrella policy........ It seems silly. :shrug:

Maybe I need to find a list of beaches in HA that allow umbrellas vs a list of those that do not. :);)
 
You can use an umbrella on any other beach in Hawaii. Ko Olina has there own rules which you can either abide by or not. At the lagoon next to the Marriott (Lagoon 2) there are permanent Tiki type umbrellas which are available for anyone's use. We generally camp out under the trees and walk down the beach to swim.

I don't know if you can rent umbrellas, or just rent chairs with canopies over them.
