Hello! I was wondering of anyone has recently used Uber in Maui. We will be needing to use it from ogg to Kaanapali. Thanks so much!

From what I understand Uber is available. Are you planning on not having a car while on Maui?

A few years ago my SIL took a bus from OGG to Kaanapali. IIRC, the price was reasonable. Google Maui Bus transportation or something similar.

Unfortunately the price of a car rental for four nights is hundreds more then the week we are having on Oahu. We have been to Maui LOTS of times, and after our busy time exploring and my husband working while on Oahu, we just want to chill during our encore at MOC. So a rental plus parking would be a ridiculous amount for just 4 nights. If Ubers are reliable, we would save hundreds of dollars this way. Now if it was a week, we would do the car rental. But we are exploring options now.

If you aren't planning to venture far then you can most likely get by without a car. I am not that familiar with West Maui to know what is close to where you are staying.

Found this that might be helpful:

An Uber from Kahului Airport (OGG) to Kaanapali, Maui can cost between $70–$100 each way. The ride is about an hour long.

Some say that Uber is a good option for getting from the airport, but service may be inconsistent at night. Others recommend renting a car because there's so much to see and do on Maui.

Yes, we can definitely make it four nights on Kaanapali without a car. We wiil be close to whalers village for dinners, and food. We love to walk, so there is Duke’s further north, too. No exploring this time, just beach relaxation. Just wanted to know if others have had success Ubering.
Thanks so much! Our four trips to and from ogg will be much less expensive than a rental, and then on top of the rental, the parking fees. Can’t believe rentals for four nights are so expensive!

When are you going and when do you arrive. As was mentioned above Uber can be spotty on Maui.

In June 2022, car rental cost at OGG was outrageous. We didn’t rent a car. We stayed at Westin Nanea, with shuttle going to Whaler Village and Lahaina town. From the airport to Nanea, we had no problem getting LYFT. I pre-booked LYFT the day before we were leaving for the airport. There was no LYFT or UBER available for us that morning! Thanks to Nanea Bell captain, got us a cab last minutes, almost missed our flight.
It has been more than 2 years, but I still would advise anyone to pre-book a cab back to the airport instead of counting on getting a rideshare, unless you are in Waikiki or other big cities. Last year, we encountered someone near Marriott Kauai Beach Club desperately trying to get UBER to the airport after returning private rental car.

What are the prices you are getting and where are you looking for the rental cars?

I booked our rental car for Maui (for 3 weeks) way back in October. I actually booked it earlier than that, but October is when we got the best price. Prices have gone way up since then, almost $1000 for the 3 week period. So if you are trying to book a car right now the prices are nuts.

We stayed in Waikoloa and was able to use Uber to and from the Kona airport. We did pre book our Uber rides and added an extra hr buffer just in case. The morning we left there was 3 taxis in the driveway of the hotel. Was surprised that there were several ubers available every day and night in Waikoloa. We purposely didn’t go far, I wouldn't have counted on taking a Uber to Hilo or the volcano. Will be doing it again in February. I would think Maui would have more drivers than Big Island.

I guess I just can't imagine being on Maui without a car. But then again I lived in California for years and it's a very car centric place. We have been to Maui many, many times....I don't even venture to guess how many. There are so many places we like to revisit that require driving. Just going to get groceries we need a car. I always start my search well ahead, sometimes a year ahead, book and then keep checking prices.

I agree and you didn't even mention the convenience of just going anywhere whenever you want. Parking on Maui isn't generally a problem either. Even if the car was going to be $200, I would rent a car because I think it is worth it. But I suppose if you know for sure that your going always be walking distance to everything you need, you can make it work.

I also have felt that when using a timeshare we are getting such a break on housing that we can afford the car.

Thanks to everyone who answered my questions about Uber. Maybe some didn’t read all of my posts…this will not be our typical exploring Maui trip…we’ve just been at KoOlina for a week, going all over the island to different parts nearly everyday while hubby had to stay in the room and work. 😣. We just want to enjoy Kaanapali this trip. We know the restaurants we can walk to and like to go to. We can get simple things like Milk and probably POG at the ABC store at Whaler’s Village. We are just going to chill at the beach. We have been to Maui many, many times…we have stayed overnight in Hana, and ordinarily we stay at least 5 nights in Wailea first then head to Kaanapali for a week. If we were staying a week, I’d rent a car. But this is a quick trip, and we just want to stay put and relax. 😊 Also, since we are doing an encore package, it’s not just the car rental fee, it’s also the parking at the resort thst adds up. That makes it crazy for four nights when we are just staying put.
We will most likely Uber to the resort then prebook a ride back to the airport. CHiam, thanks so much for sharing your experience.

Maui is hundreds more for 4 nights. Plus you have to add parking fees. It’s almost as much as the encore package!

We always figured that the cost of the car rental, airfare, etc. was part of the cost of the vacation. And since we're paying much less for lodging........

We have an SUV for 3 weeks all in for $1300. When I look up rates today it's about $2000 for the 3 weeks.

And you're doing your bit to keep traffic down. Eventually society will have a better system than "the car sits most of the day, taking up space."

Unfortunately, Uber can be frustrating. Yesterday, I gave a ride to two tourists with bicycles who were sitting on my driveway, waiting on an Uber. Four or five drivers flaked on them, and then they had to start the waiting process all over again. They were wiped out just trying to get from the water to my driveway. Since I was heading that way, I brought them as far as the flat section of Ali'i in Keauhou. At least that way they had an easy ride back to wherever their Haolewood condo was. They said they had been waiting for more than an hour.

This exact thing has happened to me at the airport. "Your ride will arrive in 15 minutes." And then 10. And 5. And then a different vehicle pops up with "Your ride will arrive in 20 minutes." And over and over again.

Yes, scoop, exactly…why would I pay to have a car sit in the parking garage when I could Uber there? Now I guess we will see if Uber comes through. If not I have my Costco car reservation as a backup.

There are always taxis at the stand at OGG. Worst case, you'll pay double but get there faster.

I agree with your strategy of ordering up an Uber in advance. If you offer a cash incentive to the driver to wait in a parking lot while you hit one of the big markets near the airport, might ensure the driver is at the airport when you land. A savvy driver could even be persuaded to keep an eye on your flight information and be there half an hour after landing.
