Bike shorts while traveling on a plane? Bike shorts have pads in the crotch. May be more than the swamp. I'm not asking people to wear fancy dresses or ties, but have some self-respect.

Even non-tattered jeans and a logo t-shirt is fine, but I may see a few from an older generation still dressing nicely. Maybe not elegantly, but khakis and a golf/polo shirt.
But that was just coach class! In the same space as the first two rows in that picture (8 passengers), today's airlines would cram in three rows with six seats each, or 18 people vs. 8! No wonder today's passengers are so cranky.
This makes TSA Pre at HNL useless. I don't know if it was just the security checkpoint we went through but they had TSA Pre that wasn't really TSA Pre. We had TSA Pre but still had to remove all our portable electronics. For many this might not be a problem but for us it isn't an easy task. That is at least five items. When we asked what TSA Pre meant, it just meant we could keep our shoes on. Whoop. It was the compromise we had to make to be able to travel to (from) Hawaii. We didn't have the issue in any Hawaiian airport except HNL.

Maui same thing, we were told NO TSA pre-check, and it actually took us much longer b/c I had a knee replacement, and had to go to the other line to use the other machine--they made me wait a long time for an agent to escort me--was told they had no staff.

That's why Rick gets cranky in coach. Even Southwest, his knees are against the seat in front of us, and if SW offers extra legroom for a high price, we will just fly United or Delta First Class. Southwest was our go-to for economy, especially after Frontier changed from our favorite to our least favrotie, but I am sure those extra legroom seats in SW will be expensive and will cramp the rest of us, as they take the extra room from economy. I don't need extra legroom. I am comfy in coach.
I have the CC so the bag fee doesn't bother me at all.
I really have to book SW for a while to get rid of credits and points we have built up. It's a lot. I feel like I bought something (gift cards galore at Costco) and it's now it's not what I bought. Like when you go to a store for a dishwasher at a great price and get there to a hardsell on a "better" model, as this one is sold, for a lot more money. I don't remember what that's called.
For some reason, when my spouse booked our recent short trip to/from Maine to see my DD's professional acting debut, he didn't book his ticket with his middle name, so his Pre-Check didn't connect to the reservation, although mine did (same reservation.) Coming through BGR, I had to wait while they made him take off his shoes (still!), remove his belt, etc., etc. He'll be more careful next time!
And, yes, I used to dress up more for air planes, too. But if I'm already going to crunch my tall frame and child-bearing hips into a ever-shrinking seat, I'm going to make sure that I can be as comfortable as possible. But if it's summer, that might be a sundress. But still....if they treat us like cargo, they shouldn't expect us to be fancy cargo, LOL!

Delta reported 2nd quarter earnings today
Gave people some updates on the condition of travel plans
The interesting part of their earnings report is the strength of premium seating vs regular seating
Delta Travelers were paying to fly in First Class and Delta Comfort seating at a greater rate than in prior quarters
Bottom line
People with higher discretionary income were voting with their wallets to pay more for more comfortable seats
They're 17". The width of economy seats doesn't change much between airlines. They don't have a lot of flexibility to make seats narrower or wider. They can slide them back and forth on the track to give more or less legroom, but the width is usually the same. Even with all the talk of seats getting smaller, the width really hasn't changed all that much in 20 years. The difference between the widest and narrowest economy seat is probably only a couple inches.
