[I posted this on behalf of a poster on TripAdvisor. She is from France and understandably is at wit's end. Does anyone have any feedback for this situation?]

Please, please can someone help me. We booked through a Wyndham owner for the week of July 4-11, 2015. This was booked back in August of 2014. We signed the contract (we have copy) and paid through PayPal for this week.

In February we called Wyndham in New Orleans to confirm that all was good, and we were told that the reservation was under the owners name, but it was for the week of July 6-10, 2015. We explained that was incorrect as we have a contract. We were advised to contact the owner. We contacted the owner and were told by the owner [name deleted] that he is waiting for the "release" of the other days to make our reservation final? We explained to Mr. Hathy, that when we spoke with him back in August of 2014 he told us then that he had the week available, why now is he saying something different. He assured us that it will be taken care of.

We have been trying to reach Mr. Hathy since April 17, 2015 via email(s) and call(s), and have not received a call or email. We also called PayPal to see what they can do, since Mr. Hathy did the transation through them. We were told there is nothing they can do as it is a "rental vacation property"?

Please, can someone help us. We do not know what to do but contact an attorney (which we are trying not to do). We felt that Mr. Hathy was a man of his word, and we cannot understand why he is doing this. We have paid airline tickets for July 4-11, 2015. We are feeling at this point, that we have lost on the tickets and vacation rental.

Please, help us.

Thank you,

What happened here is that the owner was going to try to get a discount by making a last minute reservation for you. This doesn't always work - apparently it didn't in this case. He may still be waiting for the dates to open up, but it's probably booked solid at this point. Perhaps a Wyndham owner can check for you.

I know it does no good now, but you should never pay for a rental that you can't verify upfront. You should have asked for an official Wyndham reservation, in your name, for the correct dates, upfront.

I would make a cancelable back up reservation for the 3 missing nights, just in case.

How to verify that a rental is Legit: http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109479

There is a member on this board called Ron Parise who specializes in rentals of Wyndham. I don't know what you can do about Mr. Hathy, but Ron might be able to help you out with another rental at that location .

As for recovery from [the owner], that might require you to file a lawsuit after attempting to dispute with the credit card company.

Thank you for your responses. I posted this on behalf of a poster on TripAdvisor. She is from France and understandably is at wit's end.
Unfortunately, it's people like Mr. Hathy who give timeshare renters a bad name.

A gentle request - when you quote someone, please indicate that before the post.

*I'm assuming you got her permission to copy and post her post here on TUG?

This sounds like an expensive lesson.

You should be aware july 4th weekend is a big deal in New Orleans. Its the Essence Music Fest. I wouldnt count on the 3rd, 4th and 5th coming available.

A lawyer might get your money back, but I doubt he can help with finding a vacancy for you

I sent you a PM with a possible solution

I suggest you tell her to come here and post for herself. There is no reason to slander someone by proxy. The person in question has no way to defend himself with a third person report such as this.

Ron - please note that the OP copied the post from TripAdvisor - I just edited it to indicate that.
