Try to rent or exchange with RCI?

I have a 2 bedroom ov timeshare at the Grand Pacific Resort in Carlsbad. We live here so we won't use the Easter 2011 week we booked. I have never had luck with RCI in the past but I didn't own this week. My question is should I turn the week over to the resort to rent for me, rejoin RCI and deposit it and hope to get a summer or spring break exchange to a Disney resort in Florida, or try and rent through red week? Your experiences on what you have done and how it worked would be great feedback.

Thanks

How about placing a direct exchange in the TUG classifieds. I don't know if its worth it to rejoin RCI for a 'possible' one-time exchange. Dawn

If this is the week before or after Easter - Apr. 24th, it will be a strong rental. I think you can maximize the value by renting it yourself. If it were me, I would post rental Ads AND private exchange Ads for this week - maybe a DVC owner would liked to come to CA for Spring Break.

If you let the resort rent it for you, I am sure they will take a big chunk.

Joining RCI again is going to be expensive, and holiday weeks are difficult exchanges to get.

For Max traffic, you want to post it on more than one website - I personally use these cheap or free websites to post my Ads:

TUG Timeshare Marketplace - http://tug2.com/timesharemarketplace/
1 year Membership - $15
Ads - free up to 25

www.craigslist.org (free)

www.redweek.com
Membership - $14.99 for 12 months
Timeshare Rental Ads - $24.99/ea for 6 Months
Timeshare Resale Ads - $59.99/ea for 12 Months

www.myresortnetwork.com
Membership - free
Timeshare Rental Ads - $19.95 ($24.95 - floating weeks)
Timeshare Resale Ads - $34.95

There is also a list of resale websites at the top of the Buying, Selling, Renting, board that you may want to take a look at.

Many people don't like Craigslist, because you get a lot of scammers who respond, but they are painfully obvious, and I just ignore them. Another tool I use to eliminate the scammers is that I only accept payment by Paypal which requires a verified bank account or credit card to be registered. I just rented my Hawaii timeshare for full asking price on Craigs list. On Craigslist, you need to create a Craigslist Acct., create 2 different Ads with different titles and wording, and rotate them every 3 days. You don't have to rewrite the Ads - if you create an Acct. they will be saved in your Acct. and you can just report them.

I also have my own webpage at www.freewebs.com that I've had since 2005 with lots of pictures, info., and recommendations, and I think that helps because it shows that I'm reputable and well-established.

If you'd like to see a sample Ad, click on my blue user name and send me a pm.

Great content Denise. I'd add that you should probably collect a security deposit when renting out your week. I'm no legal eagle but if the renters do damage I believe the owner would ultimately be responsible to pay.

Almost all resorts run the renters credit card at check-in and any damages, room charges, etc. would go on the renters credit card.

True, but if their credit card can't hold the amount the owner would still be ultimately responsible.

GP offered 1,000 this year for my summer one bedroom at Carlsbad Seapointe - I did not care that they made more money on the rental as that was only 100 to 200 below what I could have rented it for. However, that was a special program.

For a Spring week, I would use Redweek and all the sources that Denise suggested. Good luck

Thanks everyone that was a great help.
