Travel Router? Recs?

Sorry, don't currently use one. I had a TP Link while back, but it seemed more hassle than it was worth.

It comes in handy for hotels that limit the amount of devices to connect, not so much at timeshares.

I have the TP-Link AC750.

I've had TP-Link in the past but always ran into issues after a while where it wouldn't connect to Wi-Fi anymore, or it was to much of a pain to try and connect. I replaced it with a GL.iNet and it has worked great ever since. You can also set it up to route through your VPN provider (if you have one) so any device connected to it is on VPN. Here is the one we currently have.

WorldMark is skimpy & charges for wifi & limits number of devices ...
Actually had this but don't remember what I did with it & what my admin password was..
You can do a factory reset on those devices with a depressed button you can press with a paperclip. It resets that Admin password back to factory default. That also looks to be the TP-Link I had but replaced with the GL-iNet.

Yes, reset and the default password is on a sticker on the device.

I also have a GL.inet, but the cheapest like $40 one, not the fancier one @dioxide45 linked. Works well enough for me if Wyndham can manage to keep the wifi working AT ALL. Which is far from given IME. I have also ordered a globlinker because of that, but haven't gotten it yet, forget about testing it. We have used an old 4G AT&T hotspot on a special unlimited plan for $22 a month, but it's my sisters and so I only have it when she'll lend it to me or we travel together. But I don't need it anywhere near enough to be worth paying $22 a month myself when I might not need it for 10 months out of the year. The Globlinker also has international data supposedly available so I'll probably try and test that but maybe not till next year.

I use a travel router from Ubiquiti.

While most timeshare resorts don’t limit you, the air carriers do.
Early this year I travelled with both Lufthansa and United and they both charge a fee per device connected to the wifi.

With the travel router all of our devices are able to connect simultaneously and you only pay 1 fee to connect.

This summer we are going to Vilamoura and travel with Tap Portugal and I expect to use my travel router there too.

Just an FYI to others (I am certain you know this), personal routers are prohibited by all airlines, including United and Lufthansa.

I have been playing with the GL.iNet KVM over IP devices that allow me to set up tailscale (and other protocols) to give me a secure command and control connection into my home network. I might look into the travel router if VPN filtering becomes a problem. I used to carry a router MANY years ago when WiFi was [slow, flaky, not available] but as it became more available/stable, I used it with a VPN. Now that more site are using VPN filtering, I may revisit my approach.

I have two. I'll just copy the Amazon description: "GL.iNet GL-MT3600BE (Beryl 7) Portable Travel Routers Pocket Wi-Fi 7 Wireless 2.5G Router, Mini Portable VPN." I bought the first because we wanted a way to communicate with my 104 year old mother who is in a nursing home. Mother cannot see well and has shaky hands so cannot operate a cell phone or remote control. We bought a 21 inch Amazon Echo Show and removed a whole lot of features/widgets so that no one could shop on it or have access to personal information, credit cards, etc. I set up a photo show to run during the daytime of her family/friend photos. I can drop in and see the room and talk to her. She can respond. I needed some more security on the public wifi there and a little boost of the signal. It's worked beautifully. I bought a second to travel with but have not used it yet.

That is the same router we use when we take a group to WM. If you get it be sure to connect it at home and get it dialed in is the advice I received. I'm kind of glad I did because everything worked out exactly as planned.

Thanks! My friend "Chat" told me that too. :)

Do you think this would work at Harborside at Atlantis? I believe they have wifi routers in the rooms. I assume I would just plug the ethernet into this router and it will bypass the paywall?

Chat gpt or did you create an AI chat bot ? When I Google your friend "chat" it is interesting. I didn't know there are actual apps with ai realistic looking people. I'm not willing to give them my info so the first page was as far as I got.

I should create an AI me was what I ended up thinking. AI me and I could have some insightful conversations but I'm not ready for a smarter version of me yet, lol.

What is the reason for using a router while on travel? What am I missing? I use the hotel/resort wifi? Or if I want my own secure connection I use my hotspot. By work laptop I use the hotel/resort wifi then use the work office VPN. That is good enough for my office network.

For us, it is more about convenience. Instead of having to connect multiple devices to the resort wifi, I connect one. Then all the devices already configured to connect to that router are connected to the wifi. It can also get around device limits that some resorts have. We're usually traveling with at least six devices. I could see where it would be even better for families with kids that also have devices. No need to connect each device manually to every resort wifi.

As dioxide notes, we use the same wifi ID and password as our home which our devices are already set to auto connect. Once the travel router is setup all devices automatically connect.

Also, we use our chromecasts to stream our directv and other apps to tvs.

Not much. If you have a group they can all connect to your router. If you have kids you can filter the router. Most of our stays include free internet. The stays at Worldmark that we have to pay for internet include three devices so we log out and log in different devices if needed or we can use our router.

We rarely use a personal router at resorts anymore. I haven't brought a router on a trip for a long time.

Chat GPT. AI is amazing and scary. I went to NYC in March to attend a genealogy workshop. I was able to find the original, one hundred and eleven years old, documents from a court case involving a member of my biological family. I had to go over to Brooklyn to a warehouse to be able to see, hold and photograph them. I put the photo of the front of the folded documents on Chat GPT and asked the order which they should be placed by occurrence, what it could tell me about the documents, and what the people involved would have gone through. It told everything right down to the occupation of the Grand Jury Foreman. It told me of the judge's history on the bench and his involvement in a new movement to introduce probation rather than every person found guilty sent to prison. It told me about The Tombs and what it would have been like to be there until bailed out. Also which buildings each of the hearings or the trial would have been held in at that time and provided photos. There's more, I've forgotten but it just blew my mind. Last night I was asking Chat about alligator snapping turtles and their protected status and how one could have one removed from a pond at a garden near Augusta, Georgia. It immediately guessed the name of the garden (it's just being revived after 30 years and is 25 minutes from Augusta.) Then it went on to tell me a detailed procedure, including phone numbers to call in order to get permission from the state/region office for the removal, along with a list of local certified wildlife companies that once permitted could remove it. It gave me list of how to keep track of the turtle until they got there, and more about alligator snapping turtles. AI is amazing and saves a lot of time!
