Okay, I've entered travel insurance into the search engine and got every thread that contains the word travel.

Here's the question. I'm confirmed to a week at Maui Ocean Club next July via II. I've combined it with a travel package hotel week on Waikiki. All the flights for 4 are booked. So all in all we will be spending about 19 days including travel days. I'm interested in purchasing travel insurance from Marriott or II. How do i go about this? Which is the better insurance/value? And what does it cover? Resort week? Hotel week? Flights?

Will you have other timeshare vacations in the next year? You can buy a TS Travel plan that will cover all TS trips for about $99 for a year - you can also add on non-TS trips. See the sticky at the top of the TUG Travel forum. You need to buy it (40?) days before the trip, so if you don't have a trip right away, wait until you get closer, for maximum value.

Marriott Insurance

SMB1, I just purchased insurance through the Marriott vacation club website. I was looking at all of the different sites and ended up there. You can purchase insurance up to the day before you leave on some of the packages. They run from $65 to $175 and they're good for about 13 months. The policy is through CSA Travel and underwritten by Stonebrige. I'm leaving for Aruba in a few weeks and then St. Martin in December. So, I figured with the hurricanes and flight problems this was better than nothing. You can look at the policy for 10 days and get your money back if you don't like it. After 10 days you're stuck with it.

The real value in trip insurance for us is the medical coverage, accident coverage and medical evacuation when outside the country. Many health insurance plans do not provide coverage outside of the US. It is important to read the pre-existing condition limitations.

Agree with JimC about the benefits of travel insurance. The biggest reason to purchase the insurance for us is the medical evacuation coverage. I know of people who paid $30,000 for an air ambulance when they were out of the country and needed to return home. I just cancelled a three week USA land vacation. I didn't have travel insurance and lost $1,000 due to the cancellations. In the past my policy has been to only purchase travel insurance when leaving the country. I think that I will consider changing that in the future.

If you read some of the fine print of the cruise companies their only responsibility for someone with a medical emergency is to let them off at the next port. The cruise companies also sell optional travel insurance. However, not all policies are the same and the prices will vary.

There are many companies that offer travel insurance. American Express just sent out a big mailing to its' card holders about it. II and Marriott aren't the only companies that sell travel insurance. It's a good idea to shop around for it. You'll find several companies that will fill your travel needs.

MVCI offers travel insurance through CSA. Log on to your account at my-vacationclub.com and you will see the link "protect my vacation" under the "My Reservations" section. Although this insurance is as cheap at $65, it doesnt have as much coverage as other policies, so you may want to add to it by getting a cheap plan at insuremytrip.com.

However, for $99, I think the coverage at www.vacationguard.com is a much better deal with higher coverages and timeshare maintenance fees. This coverage is good for a year for your all of your timeshare trips, not just one.

So the travel insurance offered through II is not so good, huh? It really just covers trip cancellation/interruption and some flight baggage issues, right?

I'd suggest not purchasing from the Marriott or II specifically. Shop around and know your options and you can get a pretty decent deal usually. I used TravelInsurance.org last month when we went to the Virgin Islands - really informative site. Hope that helps!

If your flight and hotel were covered by FF miles from the air/hotel travel package, you need to read the fine print of a policy to see if those are 'covered' since you did NOT pay cash for them.
