Anyone out there ever ridden a train from the south up to Yellowstone area? I have never done the trains before but seems like it would be a good way to travel and see a lot without having to drive yourself. What about expense of that? I am totally new to this idea so any advice would be appreciated. Could we get off whenever we wanted and stay a day or so and get back on the train?

Nice idea, but it won't work. First, there is no passenger rail service close to Yellowstone- it ended close to a century ago. The interior West is not well served at all. And where there is rail service, for instance, the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle, the trains are not frequent enough to practically get off, look around for a day or so, and get back on.

Long distance passenger rail service in the US has a lot of catching up to the European counterparts to do. In this country, rails are for moving freight. It has priority.

There is California Zephyr from Chicago via Denver to SF (AMTRAK).

Read a great review in Sunday travel section and decided to book the scenic leg from Denver to Glenwood Springs this Monday where there are great hot springs at hotel. Maybe help my aches and pains.

If we like, will do couple nights in Glenwood Springs and then on to SF and those great Winery Tours when leaves are turning in Colorado!

I really loved Glenwood Hot Springs - we drove over there 2x from Vail one summer. A few days staying at the hotel when leaves are turning would be awesome.
