Trading for Three Bedroom Units

Is it possible to trade a two bedroom unit for a three bedroom unit. I'm assuming owner's of three bedroom units deposit their units and since there are fewer three bedroom units in various loctions end up settling for two bedroom units. Would II assign that unit to to a two bedroom exchanger with a better location and/or seaso. I have a two bedroom platinum unit at Aruba Surfclub looking to exchange for platinum three bedroom in Surfwatch (Hilton Head). Since the sleeping capacity are different the II website won't allow me to make request.

II has a "like for like" policy which means that if you trade a 1 bd unit you can't put in a pending request for a 2 bd unit unless the resort has only 2 bd units. So unless the resort has only 3 bd units (like one of the "palms" in orlando) you can't request a 3bd unit with a 2 bd unit.

BUT if one is sitting in the trading pool and you can see it with your 2 bd unit you can trade for it.

Good Luck

A II employee that I've gotten to know a bit once told me that 3BR units account for less than 5 percent of all units deposited for trade.

So targeting that segment for a trade, without using another 3BR, would strike me as a very, very tough get.

Maybe . . .

I've stayed in Marriott three bedrooms 4 times in the last 3 years and always used a two bedroom to exchange.

Just lucky I guess.

It depends on what you are looking for. I was just doing a search with my 2BDRM GO gold week and definitely recall seeing 3 BDRM units in the offseason, at Marriott locations and otherwise.

3 br is a tough trade

It's a real tough trade. First, as previously mentioned that trade probably would only be available during flextime (if ever) because of the Marriott's "like for like" policy.

Second, there arn't many three bedrooms at most resorts. MGC will have only 116 3br units out of 1,534 total units when finished. Many of the Marriott resorts with three bedroom units also permit lockoffs further reducing the number of 3 brs available.

However, I believe I have seen a few non-marriott 3 br available. I could be wrong about that. If I did see it, I'm sure that it was a rare occurance. I don't often see a 3 br for rent although that might be your best chance. Good luck.

I often see 3 BR units at Surfwatch in the off-season - no lock-offs there. And that's searching with my 1 BR OP gold week.

I own a 3 BR Grande Vista, but I usually lock it off. I did deposit the whole 3 BR once and ended up trading to a 2 BR because we wanted to go to NCV and that's all they have.

I have also deposited the 2 BR and exchanged into a 3 BR twice. Once at GV and once in June at Surfwatch. I had the Surfwatch June request in over a year out, and had requested a 2 BR, but it came through as a 3 BR.

Search for 3 brs

Just searched with an MGC studio abd found several 3 bedrooms. Unfortunately, they were at HHI in December or January and other off season places and dates. Maybe you'll have better luck by trading the two br.

These were available this morning for my lowly little ol' Foxrun week 33

I posted these under the sightings forum this morning. :D

Spring break at Hilton Head isn't really "off-season." :)

This was with a non-Marriott week, so I would think a Marriott will pull them.

I have read all the posts to this question and can categorically say that I have seen numerous 3 bedroom trades (and taken some) available with my Gold HGVC 2 bedroom. This includes Marriotts Surfwatch, Ocean Pointe, Grande Vista and Imperial Palms. I always do it online so there is no question/problem with "like for like". I can say that I have never gotten Platinum 3 bedroom time with my 2 bedroom. It has always been Gold or lower.

I've traded a 1BR AC for a 3BR Grande Vista (third week in June) and a 1BR for a 3BR Grande Vista (July). Both times the units were just sitting on line for the taking. Neither were in flexchange. Both were MSE 1BR units.

If you go by II's own demand charts, all of those weeks posted are during below-average or - at best - very average demand periods (including "spring break" at HH) for those locations. I don't think it's surprising there would be availability during those periods.

Getting a 3BR in HH with a 2BR during the summer? Or a ski week? Probably not impossible, but - like I said - pretty tough trade.

It is only a matter of chance.

We all know that it is possible to get 3BR weeks at any resort if there is availability. You can trade a studio for a 3BR if it is available.

The question is can a 2BR platinum Aruba be traded into a 3BR in HHI. Let's assume that the request of the OP is for a summer time unit. There will be great demand for those summer weeks. Consequently, every single summer week at HHI deposited with II will have someone waiting for it.

The only way (unless you own there) to get a HHI summer time unit is to place an ongoning search with II. You CANNOT place an ongoing search with II for a 3BR unit when depositing a 2BR unit. The ONLY way to get a 3BR unit is to get lucky when your turn comes. It is nothing more than a matter of chance.

If several deposits come in one day with only one of them being a 3BR unit, chances are that the strongest trader next in line will receive the 3BR unit. Aruba platinum obviously is a strong trader.

You CANNOT place an ongoing search with II for a 3BR unit when depositing a 2BR unit.
That's the key point.

If you use a 2BR to initiate an ongoing search for a resort that has Efficiency, 1BR, 2BR, and 3BR accommodations, you can set up the search to refuse Efficiency and 1BR accommodations, but you can't set it up to refuse 2BR accommodations and only accept 3BR accommodations. You might get lucky and get a 3BR instead of a 2BR, but there's no way to force that.

It is possible to use a 2BR to put in an ongoing search for a resort that only has 3BR accommodations, but such resorts are rare. Marriott's Imperial Palms in Orlando comes to mind. So such a strategy limits your choices to a very short list of II-affiliated resorts.

The weeks that show up on IntervalWorld.com are "leftovers" that were not needed to fulfill ongoing searches. So, as others have noted in this thread, some very good 3BR weeks can appear, although usually not in high-demand seasons. So, when school is out for the summer, and families are looking for 3BR accommodations, such weeks are unlikely to be sitting around IntervalWorld.com — especially at desirable destinations that are not over-built.

A strong 2BR should be able to see and pull such "leftover" 3BR weeks. But this strategy is is best for people who are willing to travel during lower-demand times (or on short notice with a great deal of flexibility to get FlexChange trades in the final 59 days before check-in).

Clearly, the best way to successfully trade into 3BR accommodations is to own a good 3BR and use it for ongoing searches.
