Touring worth it?

We will down at vero beach at the end of AUG. Do people explore other TS while on vacation. Can you see/expierience enough to decide if you would want to stay or buy by just walking around. I do NOT want to be attached to a guide or salemen. We will be staying a the DVC resort.

Any sence in doing this? Has anyone else toured resorts without staying at it and found it worth while? IF so, any sugestion of places to look at around Vero/datona Beach Florida?
 
We always walk through other timeshares on vacation. Just walk right in like you are staying there and know where you are going and no one will bother you. Avoid coming through the main entrance and looking lost, if you don't want the TS Sales people to catch you.

If you join TUG you can access the members only review pages for Florida and figure out which resort(s) you'd like to see.

Many TS's are gated and use rent-a-cops or a pass system to let you in. You could find yourself arrested for trespass, unless you latch onto a salesperson and ask for a presentation.

I guess that is possible, but I would explain and I think they would be hard pressed to prosecute....but I would most likely being doing a presentation. :eek:

Really? I've never seen that in Hawaii, CA, or Nevada - is that the norm in Florida?

In Florida, I guess. Here, I've seen several with walls+gates+guards, mostly on beach-fronts, where you cannot enter without explaining your business. If you say, "I have a reservation," they will look at their clipboard to see if your name is on the list. If you say, "I just want to look around," they will likely find you an "escort."
 
At the Hawaii Beach front properties you can walk right off the beach into the resort - no fences, gates, or security guards. Of course, by law, all Hawaii Beaches are public property and must allow public access. Same thing with the front entrances.

While in Marco Island, we once tried to visit a property from the beach. A dude in a beach chair on the boardwalk asked to see our key card. When we said that we were considering buying, he said, "You need to go to the sales office down the street to schedule a visit."

While our contract to buy into HGVC-Seaworld was pending, the gatekeeper there said that he'd have to contact the manager about letting us in.

OTOH, I have come across several properties in the Daytona-Ormond Beach area that are not quite so anal. These places tend to offer daily rentals, and welcome walk-ins.

While on holidays, I like to view other TS's. I just present myself at the front desk, identify myself as a member of RCI and ask if there are any units available to sneak a peek at. Very often, the person at the front desk will let me do this, sometimes having someone accompany me, sometimes not. Once, in LV, she had me leave my driver's licence as a "deposit", in case I caused any damage or made off with the toiletries.

That would be a lot of effort to steal some soap :D
 
I have done it both ways, sometimes just riding in and walking the grounds, sometimes going to the desk and asking to see inside a sample unit. Most of the older/smaller places will accomidate if they have a unit open. Mid-day Sat is a good time to do this because most of the units are in transition. Quite often they will just give you a key to go look on your own. The first time I did this we were scoping out all of the TS in a particular area becasue we wanted to buy in that area. The story worked so well that I have used it ever since, even if all I wanted was to see if it was an acceptable trade for the future.
 
I go to the front desk and tell them I would like to see the units but I don't want a "tour" and I don't want a gift. Seems like the last part "I don't want a gift." Always gets a really positive response.

The good part is that they show me what I want to see and they're very nice. The only downside is that it always seems to take about 10+ min. for them to find a sells person.
