How much do you tip the maid for daily housekeeping services?

Usually $1 or more (especially if we have had good service) per night of the stay.

I try to tip each day (in the morning when we go out for the room to be made up), because we may not have the same housekeeper during the stay.

Usually $1-2 per day per person. I do the same as above, leave it daily. I honestly think doing that has helped with better service from housekeeping. I've received extra touches and have never had anything stolen, while others in my party can't say the same.

Usually $2 a day, leave it daily on the pillow before we leave the room. Or sometimes just hand it to the maid if we're still in the room

If after the first day we receive extra good service (I don't know how to define that, it's just a feeling such as they leave extra bathroom amenities or do something else special) I add a dollar the following days. Generally I try to notice if it is the same maid each day or a different one.

Also tip another $1-2 in the evening if I request turn down service.

Have you read Nickel and Dimed?

I became more generous in my tips after reading the book Nickel and Dimed. Now I leave $3-$5 per day. How much do you tip tour guides?

We tip tour guides $5-$20 depending on the size of the group. On a large bus tour $5, on a small van tour $20. We will also usually tip $20 for a guide on hikes or ziplining type excursions.

I usually tip the younger guides more, figuring they are working their way through or to college. Also many times on hikes I have had younger guides ask if they can take my backpack and carry it. -It is the mom backpack-a cooler backpack with the lunch and (in a separate compartment)-first aide stuff, bug spray, sunscreen etc. Of course maybe they just think I am too old  Either way, if someone is willing to cart my stuff, or goes out of their way to assist those in the group, they will be rewarded.
