If you are staying near Kona Hawaii, you don't necessarily need to rent a car. There is a bicycle rental (by the ride, the hour, the day, etc...). Slow down, see the sites, get some exercise and enjoy Hawaii in a different way. The rides are $3.50 for a 30 minute single ride or $10 for all day rides of under 30 minutes. I was regularly getting a 3 speed bike at the 5 mile mark and making it into Kona almost on a daily basis (to go to the gym and happy hour... in that order).

There were bike lanes on both sides and traffic goes slowly on the beach road so it felt safe. And it was a relaxing way to get around. Next time I come to Kona, I will bring my bicycle helmet. I didn't see a place where you could easily rent a helmet and even though it felt safe, I still would have preferred a helmet. I didn't see anybody with a helmet even on the rented mopeds, but it is still my preference for the future. But it was a really fun way to get around.

Do you mean all day rides of over 30 minutes?

If you stay along Ali'i, it's a pretty nice ride. If you want to get out, though, the hills will kick your butt.

Each of the rides is of 30 minutes or less... They have options for total minutes which would allow you to ride longer. I found it easier just to park the bike in one of their locations and rent it again to go back.. I mostly just wandered around Kona... ... And yes... only along Ali'i drive... Not a good idea to torture yourself on a 3 speed bike going straight up a volcano :).

If you like biking while on vacation, you can rent bikes from individuals from https://www.spinlister.com/
I haven't tried it before, but I reserved one for our trip to Kauai in August. You can rent by the hour, day, or week. The rental may include lock, helmet, bell, and lights.

I guess if you wanted to limit yourself to a fairly small area it would be ok. But though the BI is my favorite, it is not where I would go without a car. Kailua-Kona was a fine location on our first visit, but since then when we have come we have stayed all over the island where a bike wouldn't work, though we also stay at our Timeshare at the Kona Coast Resort. That sounds like the area you rode from.

You guessed it. I was at the Kona coast resort and cars were $1500/week. I’ve visited Hawaii a lot and I found the slower pace enjoyable. But your point is valid especially if your trip is a week or so. I was on Hawaii for over a month, so a slower pace worked for me.
