1)Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where?

Yes, Hawaii. Specifically Kauai.

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
Home resort at least half the time!

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations? I’m not sure.

4) How many people do you usually travel with - total, including yourself? 5 minimum always, sometimes 7, could be up to 9 (2 sets of grandparents or cousins)

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?

We have school schedule but that doesn’t stop us from travel! We have had the kids skip whole weeks before. In my opinion these experiences are more important for my kids than trivial school weeks. When/if they do college I know there might be a little more restrictions. We have a while.

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance? Sometimes. I would say we for sure plan 8 months out.

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time? Yes

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars? 4-5

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing? We can afford up to $20k up front without financing, but we are looking to spend no more than ~$5k

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?

We can afford whatever. If we are locked in I would plan 6 months out for paying if I needed to.

11) Are you a detail oriented planner?

I’m a Type A planner with type B tendencies on certain things

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?

Yes.

It’s important to note we are relatively new MVC points members. We have 2500 a year plus a huge bonus we got when buying in (7500). We are in our 2nd year and our buy in is already almost paid off. So we will soon enough just have maintenance fees from that.

The reason I am inquiring here is because we have taken two trips in the past two years to Kauai and we are in love. It has everything we want for our family so we are wanting to secure a resale deeded week.

Does it seem silly that we want a deeded week when we have points? We will use the week certainly almost every year and then have the points for other destinations. We are fortunate enough that we can do 2-3 full week vacations each year if we really wanted. I am finding we do two usually week long trips and then sprinkle in a couple 4 day trips.

A deeded resale week absolutely makes good sense. It is far cheaper to buy and far cheaper to use than points. Plus, you already have points; you can use your points for flexibility when a full week is not the answer.

But where do you want to stay on Kauai? Poipu? Princeville? Which resort? Those questions should inform your decision.

Remember, you can rent as you figure this out. The research is not unpleasant.

Yea, I think like vacationtime said - look at all the resorts, and rent each and try it out. Check how many people can stay in a unit, I think you'd need 3BR to guarantee 10 people, or 2 2BR units which are probably easier to find. IDK how the MF compares.

s5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?

We have school schedule but that doesn’t stop us from travel! We have had the kids skip whole weeks before. In my opinion these experiences are more important for my kids than trivial school weeks. When/if they do college I know there might be a little more restrictions. We have a while.
You seem to have the same unlimited ability to travel as senior citizens or people who can work from "home". But I would suggest a little caution about your kids' ability and/or willingness to travel. As kids get older, school activities (sports activities, school plays, musical performances, etc.) have a tendency to get in the way. Not to mention some school subjects (like Math) necessitating staying at the pace of the class so that you don't fall behind. Math is a subject where you simply CAN'T move forward without perfecting the last skill. I call it a "toolbox" subject where you have to master that "tool" and put it in your toolbox before you'll be able to use that tool in the next lesson.

Just some random thoughts based on your post.

"Sometime might travel with 9 people". The 2 BR units usually sleep 6 privately and 8 in total. So, that isn't going to be able to be realized. Could you fit in a 9th person? Technically no, but in theory, yes - - if the 9th person doesn't mind sleeping on the floor, in a chair, or 3 to a bed.

Top 5 trade destinations? "Don't know". Maybe give some thought to this. The cost per week on Kauai (or any of the Hawaiian islands) is expensive. So, if you are willing to exchange to Palm Desert, or Orlando, etc., you're leaving money on the table.

Expectation of a 4-5 star resort (on Kauai), then I'd focus on Marriott.

Planning only 8 months in advance? If you're looking to book the higher demand periods (I'm not sure what they are for Hawaii, but probably Feb to early April, plus a few holidays), you might not need to change your strategy and force yourself to reserve your home unit 12 months in advance.

Use your home unit (only) half the time? Based on that and the cost of Kauai maintenance fees, I'd look around to see if you can find an Every Other Year unit on Kauai. Either the Marriott Lagoons, or Waiohai. On the "off" years, consider using your points, renting points, or do something else. An EOY unit is a bit more likely to pass the ROFR plus if on the exchange years you aren't trading into Hawaii you are trading down a bit.

Just my opinion...

Now that you are an existing MVC Club points owner, you can rent club points from another owner for around the cost of the maintenance fees, so you could try that for a while rather than commit to the relatively large up-front cost of a week. If you find you can get what you want with your points then that's good, if not then a week will suit better.
With buying a week, if you get the choice of a unit that locks off vs one that doesn't, then go with a lock-off, that will give you a bit more flexibility to be able to use it in future years.
Test out the various resorts and brands via renting from other owners on TUG or Redweek, as there is no rush and timeshares are easy to buy and hard to get rid of.
Resale club points are also another thing to consider now or in the future, the price is relatively depressed at the moment so you might be able to pick them up for $1-2/club point and then pay the $3/club point (min$3k) to fully enrol them so they work just like the ones you recently bought. It can take a few attempts to get the best deal due to MVC's ROFR, but you only loose time in trying and its worth it for the right deal.

Now the price is relatively depressed at the moment
I agree 100% with the first part of that statement but I disagree with the "at the moment". The "at the moment" makes it look like low prices may be a temporary phenomenon. I don't believe it is as I think that prices will continue to steadily go down so, if you can wait, you'll benefit in the future.
there is no rush and timeshares are easy to buy and hard to get rid of.
Truer words were never spoken. As with many things (like art work that you fall in love with at a gallery, for example), it's REAL easy to buy. But then you'll be amazed when you discover that the rest of the world is not nearly as interested when you try to sell. Indeed, when selling timeshares, it may even be a misnomer to say "sell". Because you may end up having to pay the other person to take it off your hands.
