But perhaps the oddest application of the timeshare concept is the family pooch. For those of us who want the pleasure of owning a dog, but travel or housing rules make it difficult to commit to 24/7 ownership, Flexpetz lets you own a dog for a few days or a few hours a month.

Specializing in rescue dogs, they currently offer shared ownership in New York, London and Los Angeles. On the horizon are programs in San Francisco, Paris and Boston. Of special interest to a certain family of four moving to a new house, a program is scheduled to open in Washington DC.

For $99 per month and a minimum commitment of four days per month, Fido is yours. Each member is provided with everything they need, from leash to feeding bowls to doggie bed. And food is included for each day the dog is at the home.

Members can sign up for different dogs each time they rent, or they can reserve the same pup each time. Training, for both the dog, and the screened members are included too".

In addition to the $99 month membership fee, you're billed for four mandatory uses each month at $45 each. There's also an orientation fee of $150, $99 annual administration fee, and a $75 inconvenience fee for cancellations of scheduled doggie visits.

Nice if you can afford it but how about the dog?

Hopefully the dog has a good time. They must choose very stable friendly dogs for the job. Nothing wrong with a pup working for a living. As a child I would have loved to be rented out for fun things. Have a swimming pool and need a kid to join you in splashing around? I would have been happy to be rented out.

Perhaps this is a more appropriate option for our President-elect & family!!!!

Not the best idea

It might be fun for the humans, but it's not very fair to the dogs. Most dogs need and want to bond with their people. It's hard to do that when you're constantly shuffled around from one "renter" to another. Dogs have feelings. They want to be part of a "pack" or family.

It's not like renting a car.

Ack! It sounds a bit crazy to me and not so good for the dogs. However, dogs do get boarded so I suppose they could handle a few days away once a month.

If someone wanted to rent my dog for 3 or 4 days and pay me instead of vice versa, I'd have to give it some thought!
