I love this! I taught gifted students and one of my units was structures including bridges.
That said - a bridge can be a plank that prehistoric people put across a stream - so technically - who knows which is older. Still - love this so thank you.

Its amazing how good some of the ancient stone mansons work holds up over time. Maybee we should embrace it for more of our bridges do they would last longer here in zMichigan.

I think that on the first day of 1st year Physics in college, they showed us the oscillating Tacoma Narrows bridge. It is a classic study. At the time, the engineers didn't take into account the possibility of harmonic oscillation in heavy winds. Yes, the bridge fell down. Dramatically.

The professor said that if each of us paid attention to our engineering studies and was in the lucky 1/3rd of the students that would ultimately make the grade and graduate, that we would never be responsible for another bridge to collapse for this reason.

I always showed that video. With 4th graders we were looking at forces - torsion and tension for that one.
