There is a Raising Cane's on Maui, and a Chick-Fil-A and a Sonic Drive Inn

I am most excited about Raising Cane's. We have been getting them in the Denver area for a while, but we first ate Raising Cane's on vacation in CA and Texas. Fantastic chicken fingers and fries. This is a surprise. Rick just found out from the Maui News Now website. He was looking at the shipwreck in Honolua Bay. Oh, maybe I should have led with that...

I posted a thread about the yacht.

The Sonic just opened. My wife has a doctors appointment in Kahului in April so we she wanted to stop there afterwards. I'm going to go to my old work during this visit too.

I'd like to go to Raisin Canes but we'll see what the kids want to do.

Sounds like your having a great trip. shaka

We were in Maui during their grand opening of Cane's (Aug 2022) and my daughter got a free T shirt, wristband, key chain, pen and some meal vouchers for a return visit to any location. My husband finally used the meal voucher in Portland last month. I'm so glad we don't have one near us, it would be dangerous!

The first Raising Cane's we ate at was Kapolei, not far from the Marriott's Ko Olina. Our closest one is 25 miles away in Oakland, CA

I keep hearing about Raising Canes, the Oakland one is our closest, but thats 50 miles, and just over an hour away.. bit too far for a special trip...

We have a Chick Fil-A less than 3 miles. I enjoy that occasionally but try to avoid places we have at home while on vacation..

What is "Three places to avoid in Maui if you want to buy local?"

Ghost of Alex Trebek: Correct!

"I'll take 'Hawaii' for $800."

The answer is: A Daily Double!

This thread obviously had nothing to do with buying local. :p

We finally tried Raising Cane's. One opened in San Jose early in the year, but it was located on the other side of the city. With all the commercials during the World Series, I was finally motivated enough to give it a try. The place was packed with people, so it's obviously doing well. I was surprised how simple the menu was, really just chicken fingers and fries. I liked the chicken and was pleased that it wasn't as greasy as some of the other chicken places. The fries were just okay in my opinion, but not bad; they just weren't my favorite.

I've heard they are trying to build one closer to my house, and I would be more likely to eat there more often if it were closer.

I've only had Cane's one time and it was a catered affair. I don't even remember it. I've bought the so called knock off tender sauce at Walmart and Aldi. I may try making my own tenders at home.

Sorry folks
Im a devout Popeyes fan!
When my oldest was in law school at Tulane Canes graciously delivered free food, we still
are Popeyes afterwards 🤣

When they get a Dave's Hot Chicken then I'll get excited. By far the best chicken tender out there. Not breaded but a dry rub, so no thick breading and loads of flavor and spicey as much as you like it.

Not sure what you mean, but Dave's Hot Chicken is most certainly breaded and not simply a dry rub. The breading is what helps hold the Nashville hot sauce.

We have a bunch of those popping up in the Denver area, including one close to church. I will try it, as long as it's open on Sundays. Thanks for mentioning it. I think my brother recommended it. I remember something about a hot chicken place in conversation during our summer picnic.

Now there's a headline that makes me . On Maui, this is exciting? On Maui. ANywhere in Hawaii? You're on an island thousands of miles from major land masses. Eat seafood. I can't say seafood is all we eat while in Hawaii, but, for protein, seafood is about 75% of what we eat. And fast-food? IDK, maybe 2%?

Maybe if I got my wish and I spent 7 wks/yr in Hawaii, I'd get around to that.

Don't do fast food at home or on vacation.

I spend 50-ish weeks a year here and haven't bothered. I tried a McTeri burger once. (Slightly better than the usual garbage they sling at Mickey-D's. But still Mickey-D's.) And the KFC in Kailua-Kona is marginally better than the mainland. It's still KFC. But it's KFC when people who give a damn show up for work. They're held to higher standards because it's popular with Japanese visitors. Only been there a couple times in 10 years. But there was a Japanese family there each time.

When Hatechicken opened in Honolulu, there was a four-hour line around the block.

If I didn't have way too many projects already, I'd open a Krispy Kreme franchise just south of Kailua-Kona. I like free money as much as the next guy.

While that is true, before opening the thread I assumed that the OP was posting an "I can't believe this is here!" complaint, not an "I'm excited about this!" compliment.
I remember when I was working at Sysco on Oahu when Chick Fil A was working on coming to Hawaii. There is some much do worry about and make happen compared to just being on the mainland. You really have to jump in and make the commitment to do business in Hawaii. That's why many don't even bother. 🤙🏻

Oh, no, I was excited about it. Raising Cane's opened recently in the Denver area, and we are fans of the chicken. What does it matter that it's fast food? "A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet," and as far as chicken fingers is concerned, the ones at Cane's would be better than any katsu chicken on the islands. I have had chicken katsu several times, and it's never as good as Cane's.

I am not a food snob. My favorite meals on Maui are at the ABC stores' deli in Kapalua, Captain Jack's for burgers and fish and chips, and of course Cool Cats.

I am not one to go to a fancy restaurant. Rick and I use the crockpot at Hono Koa for green chili and pulled pork. We are not exciting people. Expensive food never lives up to the hype.

I like Lelani's on the Beach, haven't tried Monkeypod Kitchen on Maui but did on Oahu. It was fine but pricey. I like Hula Grill, used to love Kimo's and Lahaina Fish Co. Those burned in the fire, along with Paia fish market in Lahaina.

There are fewer choices than we had before.

I always find the judgement of others based on where they go to eat when on vacation rather fascinating. Why does anyone care where some other person goes to eat. Many here also travel a lot, like several months of the year. Many cook in the unit but if you don't want to do that and don't want to go for the commitment of a full service sit down meal, why does anyone else care that they grab some fast food or quick service from a chain?

I don't know if you were taking my post as judgement. I was only saying what our preferences are, home and travel. I don't care where others eat.

I don't know if there's a Popeye's on Maui, maybe somewhere in Kahului.

Jack-in-a-Box was terrible on Maui. We went there after a long flight and most everything was closed. We were starving. It was bad. I would rather not eat.

No Popeyes on Maui. There are many on Oahu and one on the Big Island and that's it.🤙🏻

I find it fascinating how they manage to get so much sodium and so little protein in something that is supposedly made of white-meat chicken.

They must inject it with salt water, so you know, it sort of is like seafood. And how does it get 90% as much fat as protein by weight? 90% as much fat as protein by weight is what you would get from a chicken breast smothered in a cream sauce.
Cooked lean chicken is supposed to be 30% protein by weight. This is 19%.
And whatever sauce they give you is even worse "nutrition"-wise, unless ... do any of these joints have a GLP-1 sauce?
