Anyone planning a visit to...
Staunton is one of the oldest towns west of the Blue Ridge, and was fortunate to be able to escape the Civil War relatively unscathed. The city boasts six contiguous historic districts that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum in Staunton Virginia
The General Tour includes:
• Manse Tour: Visitors receive a guided tour of Wilson's birthplace, the Presbyterian Manse,
the home provided by the church for the Reverend Joseph Ruggles Wilson and his family.
Interpreters will take you back to 1856 when Wilson was born and discuss his family,
upbringing, and the lifestyle of the period. Tours are 35 minutes.
The guided Manse tours leave at the front desk of the Museum at:
10:00 am 11:00 am 12:15 pm 1:30 pm 2:45 pm 4:00 pm
• Museum Tour: Visitors receive a self-guided tour of the Museum and explore President Wilson's life through seven galleries. The Museum also features the President's original 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine and a recreated World War I trench.
• Adult: $14.00 • Seniors (60+): $12.00

Directions From the North:
(Massanutten Resort Area)
1. Traveling on Interstate 81, take exit 225 and
turn right onto the Woodrow Wilson Parkway/Route 262 west.
2. Go 1.6 miles. At the first traffic light, turn left onto Route 11 south toward downtown Staunton.
3. At the fork, bear right and continue on North Augusta/Route11 Business.
4. Less than a quarter mile at the next fork, bear left onto North Coalter Street.
5. Continue past Mary Baldwin College and the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library
is just past the college on the right side of North Coalter Street.
6. Handicap parking entrance is on North Coalter Street. Turn right into the lane past
the President’s Birthplace (red building) and Smith House (brick building).
7. Turn right onto East Frederick Street into the left lane. (The street is one way.)
8. After one-half block on East Frederick Street,
turn left into the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum parking lot.
Thomas Woodrow Wilson - The 28th president of the United States
Born: 28 December 1856, in Staunton, Virginia.
He married Ellen Axson in June 1885, and the couple had three daughters
He married Edith Bolling Galt, a widow, in December 1915
Died: February 3, 1924, Buried Washington National Cathedral in District of Columbia (1115)
The Birthplace Manse
Sitting atop the crest of a hill in downtown Staunton's Gospel Hill historic district is the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson. The house is often referred to as a manse which is the term the Presbyterian Church uses to identify the residence of their minister.
MUSEUM
Opened to the public in November 1990, the Woodrow Wilson Museum is housed in an adaptively-renovated chateau style mansion adjacent to Woodrow Wilson's Birthplace.
GARDENS
The garden is located behind the Manse and is open to the public from dawn until dusk.
Visitors do not need an admission ticket to tour the gardens.
FREE PARKING is located behind the campus.
Mobility Issues: To get from the parking lot to the Admissions building requires walking up several flights of stairs or walking up a steep sidewalk on either East Frederick or Beverley Street. Please take this into consideration when planning your trip to the Library & Museum. Visitors with mobility issues may be dropped off on Coalter Street where the Admissions building is located.
Handicapped Parking: Handicapped parking is not located in the general parking lot, but off Coalter Street down the alley next to the Museum. Turn into the driveway directly in front of Museum near the Pierce-Arrow limousine display. One handicapped parking spot is immediately on the right. A second handicapped parking spot is just behind the Museum on the left.
The Staunton Trolley
The GREEN Trolley route is very popular with visitors and sightseers. It includes stops in the city’s celebrated historic downtown core, the Wharf Historic District, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum, and Gypsy Hill Park. The trolley makes a continuous loop around downtown and stops at the Visitor Center every 30 minutes. Staunton offers three different trolley routes.
There is a 25-cent charge to ride the trolley.
