Anyone planning a visit to...

Staunton is one of the oldest towns west of the Blue Ridge, and was fortunate to be able to escape the Civil War relatively unscathed. The city boasts six contiguous historic districts that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum in Staunton Virginia

The General Tour includes:

• Manse Tour: Visitors receive a guided tour of Wilson's birthplace, the Presbyterian Manse,
the home provided by the church for the Reverend Joseph Ruggles Wilson and his family.
Interpreters will take you back to 1856 when Wilson was born and discuss his family,
upbringing, and the lifestyle of the period. Tours are 35 minutes.

The guided Manse tours leave at the front desk of the Museum at:
10:00 am 11:00 am 12:15 pm 1:30 pm 2:45 pm 4:00 pm

• Museum Tour: Visitors receive a self-guided tour of the Museum and explore President Wilson's life through seven galleries. The Museum also features the President's original 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine and a recreated World War I trench.

• Adult: $14.00 • Seniors (60+): $12.00

Thomas Woodrow Wilson - The 28th president of the United States

Born: 28 December 1856, in Staunton, Virginia.
He married Ellen Axson in June 1885, and the couple had three daughters
He married Edith Bolling Galt, a widow, in December 1915
Died: February 3, 1924, Buried Washington National Cathedral in District of Columbia (1115)

The Birthplace Manse

Sitting atop the crest of a hill in downtown Staunton's Gospel Hill historic district is the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson. The house is often referred to as a manse which is the term the Presbyterian Church uses to identify the residence of their minister.

MUSEUM

Opened to the public in November 1990, the Woodrow Wilson Museum is housed in an adaptively-renovated chateau style mansion adjacent to Woodrow Wilson's Birthplace.

GARDENS

The garden is located behind the Manse and is open to the public from dawn until dusk.
Visitors do not need an admission ticket to tour the gardens.

FREE PARKING is located behind the campus.

Mobility Issues: To get from the parking lot to the Admissions building requires walking up several flights of stairs or walking up a steep sidewalk on either East Frederick or Beverley Street. Please take this into consideration when planning your trip to the Library & Museum. Visitors with mobility issues may be dropped off on Coalter Street where the Admissions building is located.

Handicapped Parking: Handicapped parking is not located in the general parking lot, but off Coalter Street down the alley next to the Museum. Turn into the driveway directly in front of Museum near the Pierce-Arrow limousine display. One handicapped parking spot is immediately on the right. A second handicapped parking spot is just behind the Museum on the left.

The Staunton Trolley

The GREEN Trolley route is very popular with visitors and sightseers. It includes stops in the city’s celebrated historic downtown core, the Wharf Historic District, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum, and Gypsy Hill Park. The trolley makes a continuous loop around downtown and stops at the Visitor Center every 30 minutes. Staunton offers three different trolley routes.
There is a 25-cent charge to ride the trolley.

Just visited our first presidential library this summer: LBJ's in Austin. I wasn't really interested in going, but my wife really wanted to go. Boy was I surprised! It was a great experience -- way beyond my expectations. Now I will seek out other presidential libraries when we travel.

I *LOVE* the US Presidents' libraries! I visited my first one out in California . . . actually two on the same trip . . . Nixon & Reagan. I've been hooked ever since. I have been to about 6 or 8 of them . . . still need to get to several more though.

For those interested, they do have a "passport book" program where you can have your booklet stamped. Get all of them and you will receive some sorta of Presidential memento. NOTE: For some reason Woodrow Wilson's is not part of the passport program . . . I think because it is not part of the US National Archives but rather, is administered by the US National Park Service.

And I also loved LBJ's when I toured there back in 2015.

That sounds fun! I just bought a National Parks passport this year when I was in Hawaii. Then I would have 2 to work on.

Here's another "passport" program I do . . . offered and administered by the US Lighthouse Society! If a particular lighthouse isn't participating or you're unable to get the "stamp" because they are not open when you visit, a photo makes for a nice remembrance of your visit. (I actually PREFER using my own photos at most lighthouses!)
