Verizon Wireless is sending out some unusual e-mails to some of its most voracious users: Please stop.

The company confirmed in a statement Friday that it is reaching out to a limited number of customers who use an "extraordinary" amount of data, informing them that they must switch to a tiered plan by Aug. 31 or or their accounts will be suspended. If that happens, customers will have 50 days to reactivate their accounts under a tiered plan. If they don't, their accounts will be terminated.

This has always been a policy of the carriers, ever since the first unlimited data service was offered. Now and then there are reports of the carriers sending similar message. This is nothing new.

Back in about 2001 I was a principal in a class action lawsuit against a well known dialup internet company. My account was terminated without warning supposedly for excessive usage. The company lost that suit and had to reword it's unlimited use claim. Of course I was paid off well but could not rejoin. I moved on.
