I am looking for a place to stay in Telluride for the first time for only a few nights, so will likely rent with cash during ski season. I would prefer in town due to the lower elevation over the mountain village. Can anyone recommend The River Club and if so, how would you compare it to say Marriott Summit Watch in Park City regarding luxury, convenience, etc. My family really wants to try Telluride but I don’t ski and am looking for a nice place to relax while they are on the mountain.

And my second Telluride question - I would like to drive from Telluride to Vail during the end of March because I have the Ritz Carlton Vail reserved for the second half of the week. How much and where along the route do I need to worry about snow? I am familiar with the risks of the Denver to Vail drive but I am trying to access the risks of driving from Telluride to Vail. I am thinking we will fly into Montrose and out of Eagle at the end of the week.

The River Club is in town and upscale but I cannot provide a comparison to Park City. When you are in the town of Telluride, everything is within walking distance. Another option is Mountain Village which may provide more room and the free gondola goes between the town of Telluride and Mountain Village. Both are great locations. The ski routes are halfway between the two on the gondola stop.

We go to Telluride in the spring/summer so I cannot comment on winter driving. We fly in and out of either Montrose or Grand Junction and have experienced snow in June.

In our skiing days Telluride was our second favorite western ski area (Jackson Hole was our first). We have also made summer trips there. In September, 2017 we spent a week at The River Club. Pleasant, upscale, and the 2-bedroom suite was very comfortable for the 4 of us. They had a van they used for guests within town. We walked to the grocery store, then called and they picked us and our groceries up, and returned us to our suite. My son and daughter-in-law had them drive them to the end of town and then hiked back to The River Club. They also had bikes available to use on the trails along the river.

The first time we skied there we flew into Denver and drove. We later realized how lucky we were that all the passes were open when we did this. From then on, we flew into Montrose or Grand Junction. I can’t give you details on the drive you're doing but I will say be prepared for the weather and expect delays.

Taking the highway from Telluride back to Montrose then north to Delta and Grand Junction, then east on I-70 to Vail is mostly river grade with no mountain passes. Should be an easy drive, just long, unless there is a late season blizzard. Departing from Eagle, CO is definitely the better choice versus out of Denver.
