On the day the merger was legal I got this notice.

Your flight has changed!

OGG-DFW arrival 0450 on Mar 14

DFW-AUS departure 0935--that is a four hour 45 minute layover!!:annoyed:

I had originally booked a flight that left at 0730 but that flite no longer exists.

There is an American flight that leaves at 0830 but American won't change the flite unless I fork over $200 each for my wife and I. There are seats available

If I change the flight it costs me $400 but American can change the flite and they don't pay me $400. If I were younger I'd protest.

American has done this to me before but this will be the last time I use them to fly to and from Hawaii.

Yep, that stinks.

My son and daughter in law are in Newport News VA. They are midway between the Williamsburg airport and Norfolk. They have more choice of what airlines to fly than I do, buy many fewer flights.

They had flights on USAir, flying through Charlotte, to get home for Christmas. They got a similar flight notice. But, on theirs, they cut the layover time in Charlotte from 2 hours to 1 --- they had been planning on eating and relaxing in Charlotte. Now they will be at a dead run to get to their connection - historically they arrive in Terminal A and depart from Terminal C.

Hope yours works out for you. I think that it is worth the protest.

Usually when there is a change in times over 1 hour, they will allow a flight change at no cost or allow you to cancel for a refund. I would call back.

I agree; I've had many flights changed to much better ones when they increased--or decreased--the lay over. Be sure to say that "at my wife's and my age, this is a significant problem; we can no longer deal with the longer trip times." I bet they will respond with speed.

The key thing to say to them is that the new flights are "unacceptable" with that kind of layover they should switch your flight with no fees.

Sterling, I don't think your flight changes have anything to do with the AA/USAir merger. It's the way all airlines do business these days. I've had equal opportunity to be "gifted" more time to explore airport hubs by several different airlines. As others advised, try talking with another agent to change your flights back to a reasonable layover. Good luck!

I agree. We've had similar changes on United and Delta in the last few years. This isn't unique to American, USAir or America West or whatever you remember them by.

Delta once increased our layover to 5 hours AND, we still missed our connection. Of course mother nature had a little bit to do with that.

Call back and talk with someone different. With that type of layover due to their change, they should change it for free.

We have had this type of thing happen on multiple occasions on different airlines, so I would guess it has nothing to do with the merger. We have often considered calling in to get changes made to "better" flights...shorter layovers, earlier or later departures or arrivals...but have often found no better flight combos exist any more! It really ticks me off, because I do all our travel arrangements and do a lot of research finding flights that work well for us, and then the airline changes everything, and never has it been for the better for us. But that is clearly the nature of air travel these days.

It Just Happened to Me too

I just received an email from Alaska Airlines a couple of weeks ago telling me that my flight from San Diego to Honolulu next summer had been changed. It was going to have an hour longer layover. I have a connecting flight to Maui and am traveling with an infant and staying two hours longer was not acceptable. Because the Alaska flight was really a Delta ticket, I had to actually call Delta. They gave me a choice for free to determine when I wanted to leave and return. I was able to do that for FREE!!!!

Call your airline back.

I have been able to shorten the layover time with Alaska when connecting flights get changed - I tend to book very early and schedules do change. I get on the phone and I am polite but firm. The changes have always been at no further cost.
