We enjoyed movie too; and we don't go out often to theatres.
Really enjoyed the humor dialog injected into various parts of the movie.

There were several comments earlier about the movies technical improbabilities. The one even I noticed was when Damon used plastic and duct tape to cover a large opening. My husband, the decompression guy, says NO WAY. But we understand the situation was needed for the plot story line.

Well, sure. Where movies are concerned, unless it says it's a 100% totally true documentary, I tend to suspend my disbelief, since I'm being told a story. I can go with that. It's entertainment.

Finally saw "The Martian". Loved it. And yes, we laughed, a lot more than I expected. We saw the regular version, I'm not a huge fan of 3D and as I've been having some issues with dizziness in the last few days I'm really glad we chose the version we did.

in the book its explained a good bit more that the material isnt just "plastic" and the tape is super special designed to ahere to and seal the "plastic sheets". it was more of an epoxy resin/tape in the book...vs just a roll of random tape.

im sure somewhere something like that exists....and it was certainly more believable as it was told in the book!

Mars' Atmosphere Stripped By Solar Winds, NASA Says - by Kenneth Chang/ Space & Cosmos/ International New York Times/ The New York Times/ nytimes.com

"The air on Mars — what there is of it — is leaking away, about half a pound a second sputtering into space, scientists announced on Thursday.

The planet’s early atmosphere is thought to have been as thick as or thicker than Earth’s today, and even over the 4.5-billion-year history of the solar system, that slow leak would not explain how it atrophied to its current wisps.

But new readings from NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission — Maven, for short — show that when Mars is hit by a solar storm, the ferocious bombardment of particles from the sun strips away the upper atmosphere much more quickly.

That could help explain the disappearance of the atmosphere. The sun during its youth was more unsettled, with many more solar storm eruptions, and it shone brighter in the ultraviolet wavelengths that also help knock atoms out of Mars’ atmosphere.

“What this tells us is loss through space has been an important process,” said Bruce M. Jakosky, a scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado and the principal investigator for the Maven mission..."

NASA's Top Planetary Scientist Told Us What He Thinks of the Science in the Oscar-Nominated Film 'The Martian'. - by Tanya Lewis/ Science/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

"The Martian" — last year's must-see film based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir — has been nominated for a bunch of oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor.

Back when the film came out last October, we chatted with NASA Head of Planetary Science Jim Green, who was a consultant on the film, about just how much science the movie gets right.

"What Andy did is kind of unique in science fiction," Green told Business Insider, referring to Andy Weir, the author of the book. While a lot of sci-fi centers around things that are not possible in our current understanding of science, "Andy decided to write science fiction about a future which would be bounded by the laws we know."

Here's the inside scoop from Green about what was scientifically accurate in the movie:..."

It won the Golden Globe for best comedy and Matt Damon won for best actor in a comedy. It has also been nominated for several Academy awards. :D

I've seen the movie a few times now. Very entertaining. As I said before, I can suspend a certain amount of disbelief because it's a story. I don't care whether the science is factually accurate or not. Just give me entertainment that keeps me from heading to the concession stand half way through. This movie did that.

Congratulations to the cast and crew for the awards received so far. I think on Oscar night it'll be a tight race between Matt Damon and Leonardo Dicaprio.

We saw it in October while in Vegas. It wasn't a comedy for me-- I was on the edge of my seat, and we were in those nice recliners at a remodeled theater near The Strip. I was definitely nervous for the guy. I remember funny moments, but it was an edge-of-the-seat flick for me.

Even the morning after news show hosts were puzzled by the comedy category as was I.

I think of it as a drama/suspense-drama with some laugh-out-loud comedic moments.

I'm not sure how it will transfer over from the big screen and/or 3-D screens to the small screen.

Would love to see it win a few Oscars. -

I think the director, Ridley Scott, seemed surprised as well when he accepted the Golden Globe. :D

Well, I just watched it. Very good. No way is it a comedy. It was suspenseful.

I don't think he was really surprised as the categories were announced ahead of time. I think he was bemused, happy to get the award but not happy about the category. I think he was more than a little bit ticked.

What I meant was he was surprised it ended up in that category. I realize he knew ahead of time it had been placed in the comedy category.

We seen it the other night. I had read most of the book, and had to stop because I thought it was a bit boring; the movie condensed quite a bit of the exposition, and consequently was much tighter, and IMO better.

The only part I didn't care for was the part at the end where he tore a hole in his suit to create a pressure jet. I just think the writers could have come up with something more elegant than that. But still, nice film.
