The Colonies at Williamsburg - Fixed and Floating Weeks

I am thinking about purchasing The Colonies of Williamsburg 4 bedroom to split into 2 - 2 bedrooms, with a high TDI to exchange into Interval international. There are fixed weeks but are there also floating weeks? If there are floating weeks, what is the process to book a unit each year to get the high TDI weeks?

I've seen floating weeks offered for sale there via eBay and a few other spots, but the floating weeks were something like 1-7, i.e., no possibility to get a high TDI week.

I also believe a fixed week (in 150 TDI territory) is the way to go if you want to use it as a trader. You will then KNOW you have a great week every year to trade vs it being determined by being able to book the right week. I was looking for a good and affordable the Colonies (CWQ) week to use as a trader for at least a year (holding out for a bargain) before I got one. Like @Eric B, I never saw a float week that was in prime season (and when I saw float weeks listed, I questioned in my mind if they really existed ... I have never seen an estoppel for one).

I am curious how the market for CWQ prime weeks goes in the next few months and years. I wonder if people hoping to trade into DVC create more of a market. As it stands now, I can see some of the lower trading value DVC weeks listed when searching with a 2BR side. I can see all of them when searching with it using it as a 4BR. At this point I would buy a Hyatt, Vistana, or Marriott that traded using system points vs. something like CWQ. But trading into DVC is not my thing.

How does trading peak weeks at the Colonies compare to Williamsburg Plantation Resort? or Vacation Village? Is there a reason why it would be a better trader than others?

In my experience the two (The Colonies and Vacation Village at Williamsburg, which was formerly named Williamsburg Plantation) get close to the same results. I believe The Colonies might have the edge on VV Williamsburg because both sides of the lock off have full kitchens, but never really noticed a difference in search results. I never owned the same week at the two of them at the same time, so can't vouch for it with 100% confidence, but they seemed to get the same inventory to me to the extent that I never really noticed a difference.

That makes sense now that you mention the kitchens.

This is the floorplan on VV website. It looks like both sides of the 2b LO have the same kitchen.

I just watched the video. I think the differences are that the Colonies have 1. a water feature in the pool, 2. fireplaces, and 3. heated indoor/outdoor pools.

There are several different floor plans at VV Williamsburg; that's one type. Here's the link to the room type listing in RCI for them in which you'll see two 2 BR unit types that sleep 6 and have different kitchens:

There is another floor plan that sleeps 8 instead of 6 in a 2 BR.

If you go to the actual Vacation Village website rather than the Daily Management one there is a description of the unit amenities for VV Williamsburg includes the following:

  • A Suite kitchens are fully equipped with stove, dishwasher, full-size refrigerator with ice maker, microwave convection oven, drip coffee maker, and toaster
  • B Suite kitchens feature many of the same amenities as Suite A with the exception of the stove and, in only a few rooms, a dishwasher

In contrast with that, the description of the unit amenities for The Colonies includes the following:

  • Fully appointed kitchens equipped with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances including stove, dishwasher, full-size refrigerator with ice maker, microwave oven, drip coffee maker, blender and toaster

This might also be true. I've actually never been to either, but used them as traders. To get a better feel for the differences, I guess it would be best to just go there and see; I might get to one of them some day but can't really help any more than I've already tried to.

Thank you!!!

I used the Vacation Village website for the individual resorts. I'm not sure what the daily management one would be.

The 2 BR sleeps 8 is a 2 BR lock out of 2 one Bed room units. The 2 BR sleeps 6 are the 2BR portions of the 4 BR unit.
