The Best Free Tourist Attractions In Every State
By Dan Ketchum/ Saving-Money/ Travel/ GoBankingRates/ gobankingrates.com

"In 2016, the travel industry in the U.S. generated $2.3 trillion, with Americans spending over $683 billion on leisure travel alone, according to the U.S. Travel Association. You can start planning a fun and frugal trip by selecting a free destination from this list of iconic monuments, stunning displays of nature, and quirky, charming oddities across the U.S., but you’ll have to figure out your own budget-friendly travel, grub and sleep accommodations.

To help you start planning your vacation, here is the lowdown on free attractions in all 50 states...."

The title should read, "Best off-beat attractions."
Alaska: Glacier Bay? Sure... But you gotta pay to get there.
Florida: Big Cypress is a valuable preserve, but it's a swamp.
How about... Any beach, which is what the state is known for?
Tennessee: A museum? What is Smoky Mountains NP? Chicken feed?

I am not "feeling" this list. I think it's a stretch. I could probably think of a lot better things than these in many of the states.

Like Glacier Bay- ummm.. good luck just getting there for free. But you can hike Chugach National Forest for free. Hawaii? I mean- most of the beaches on the islands are free. Stop off the side of the road and there you are!

Vermont and New Hampshire? What about the White and Green Mountains and many of the lakes?

Richard, I am also not feeling this list. I have never heard of Maymont in Richmond, VA.
I have counted the list of the best tourist attraction in each state; that we have actually visited ten (10), but not the home in Virginia.

I thought CA would be better also. The photo reminded me of when I used to live in SF and ride my bike to Golden Gate Park. The flower conservatory there is free the first Tuesday of the month.

I highly recommend the listed Crystal Bridges Museum of Art in Bentonville, Arkansas and the Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Old Sheldon ruins in SC is a favorite stop of mine as I cut up/down Hwy 17 to I-95 on my way to and from Florida. Not too far off the highway and if you are fortunate enough to be there alone, it's an awesome feeling. Burned by the British Army and said to have been burned by Sherman's Army but the walls still stand. More about it here: https://scpictureproject.org/beaufort-county/old-sheldon-churchhtml

IMHO - a list of best free tourist attractions in any state that doesn't feature the world's largest ball of twine rolled by one man isn't worth the calories expended to click on the link.

Larger twine balls may exist, but Minnesota farmer Francis Johnson’s is the largest rolled by a single individual. His efforts have inspired copycats, but none yet have succeeded in breaking the record set by this visionary, who started the twine ball in 1950 and continued rolling it until 1979. The twine ball measures 12 feet in diameter, a whopping 17,400 lbs, and took 29 years to make, with Johnson toiling four hours a day. He was an independent craftsman - he even carved his own tweezers to pull the twine, some of which are on display in the tiny museum adjacent to the ball’s gazebo.

The Minnehaha Falls in Minnesota is a good one. We often stop at the restaurant next to it when biking the Mississippi River Trail.
