The 1 Big Mistake You Should Never, Ever Make With Your Passport

While I enjoy your many posts, I truly dislike clickbait subjects like this one. If you're going to post these links it would be great if you would also include the highlight of the article so TUG doesn't just become another source of clickbait links.

In this case, it's just about the passport expiration date and having six months validity beyond the trip (which, fwiw, has been posted on TUG countless times).

I agree, but almost all sites are clickbait machines now. It is hard to read anything on the net.

Yet why should we just accept that on TUG when it can be so easily improved?

I dont; really accept it but don't have a way to stop it. It has sort of become a de facto part of the lounge, and technically doesn't violate any rules.

Just because it doesn’t violate the rules doesn’t mean it can’t be better, or more informative. I don’t have a way to stop it either, but thought it’s worth a request so that the OP might include additional info for his future posts.

On-Topic:
So when is the optimal time to submit a renewal application?
Say, if one expires in March 2025, should one apply in August?

The State Department recommends renewing 6-9 months before your current passport expires. Some countries require you to have at least 6 months remaining on your passport.

I usually renew mine sometime in final year, whenever I have a gap in my planned travel...

In a perfect world, renewed passports would simply add 10 years to one's existing expiration date. But since the travel world is not perfect, I renew mine sometime in it's last year of validity, but in no case during it's last 6 months if I have existing travel plans.

The 6 month 'rule', comes from the fact that many (most?) countries visas expire 6 months from issuance. It wouldn't do to have an invalid passport while you have a valid visa for wherever in the world you are.

I also agree that posters in the TUG Lounge should try to avoid click-bait reposts.

We renewed our passports one year out before the expiration date. We try to avoid the 6 month rule.

This is what we did. Paid to expedite, as well.
