Is airfare typically a lot higher than normal during Thanksgiving week? We were planning on a stay then, but tickets from Sacramento to Maui have been $1000+. We usually pay $400-600.

Yes, school holidays are always higher.

You should sign up for an Alaska Airlines Visa, and use the $99 companion fare that you get every year. Plus you will get miles as a sign up bonus.

Yes, very high, even with advanced booking. That's why I am going to mexico now at thanksgiving for the second year in a row.. much cheaper

We went to Maui for Thanksgiving in 2014. The prices for airfare never dropped in the 10 months that I tracked them. I even kept my fare watch on through the dates of our travel because Alaska gives you flight credit with the fare drops, but no dice. You may be able to get a big reduction if you extend the start/end dates of your trip. Check out the fare calendars to find the sweet spots.
