Ok i HAVE an iphone 4s and I REALLY need
A good GPS, text to speech app
Suggestions?
TIA

Look up the TomTom app.

We use TomTom also, and I've been impressed. The car mounting kit for it is also nice, but basically costs about as much as a standalone GPS.

Tom Tom is the gold standard. But.... if you are looking for a free app, I'd go with Mapquest 4 Mobile.

Waze

Waze is a free, community-based traffic & navigation app

When you download Waze, you not only get free navigation, but also become part of the local driving community in your area, joining forces with other drivers nearby to outsmart traffic, save time and improve everyone's daily commute. All you have to do is drive, so get involved today!

I like this one and it works well here in Canada!

$60 for Tom Tom on iPad? May as well just buy a unit for the car or to carry.

Price depends on which countries you require. And, when I used it often it was great to have on my phone since I have it with me everywhere, including when I travel...much more convenient than taking yet another item on trips. I haven't used it much lately since my new car has nav. I did use it last week on the east coast on my iPad, and it was very convenient (note than buying it once works like all other iOS apps synced to the same computer, which in my case means my iPhone and iPad have the TomTom app). Fwiw, I think i paid $30 or $40 for US only maps.

That's a good point that it can be "shared" with all that sync with your computer. That means myself, DW, and three teenage kids on iPhones and an iPad. This dilutes the cost to around $8 per device

Also, the price changes frequently as they run sales. I wouldn't be surprised to see one this Friday...

AppShopper is a good way to monitor for price drops and also to see historical pricing. Here's the US only version of TomTom:

It looks like it's been as low as $32.99 (from 8/29 - 9/1) and $34.99 (many times).

I'd also recommend Waze. Great free app. It recently saved me about two hours in a traffic jam by alerting me way ahead of it so I could go an alternate route.
It also helps with police, as you can mark where they are for the other users.
