Where is the best place to buy premium tequila in the hotel zone or actually anyplace in Cancun? TIA :whoopie:

Almost forgot, if I put it in my suitcase, I can bring it back, right?

There is a store in the restaurant called Destiladeras and they have some sampling going on there. You can buy just about any kind of tequila there.

nooo, they are overpriced for actual purchases. I was also pretty disappointed with their selection. Couldn't even buy something I had tasted in the restaurant in their store section. :(

Anyway, I've heard a lot of people go to wal-mart of sam's club, but since I don't set foot in either of those two stores, across from wal-mart downtown is a store called la Europa. In the hotel zone, at Plaza Flamingo there's a store called Museo del Tequila (not to be confused with Museo del Mezcal), they have decent assortments and prices, fairly knowledgeable staff as well. At La Isla there's a souvenir store that I totally don't know the name of (very sorry) that had some tequilas we had a hard time finding at other stores. (Lapis Anejo), they were reasonably priced as well. Occasionally we'll get a couple things from la Fiesta (either location) you bus ticket usually ahs a 10% discount coupon on it for this store.

Not intending to shop there, but we had to look, we found a couple things we liked at fair prices at the airport duty free shop.

and yes, if you put it in your suticase, you can bring it back. We had <cough> a couple bottles packed with no casualties.

I just find the tequilla I like and just go into all the little stores and price it out. Every store will have a different price. There is a store at Plaza Flamingo near Margaritaville that typically has good prices. i shop for a tequilla that my neighbor likes that is not exported to the states!

I found that the tequila was more expensive in Cancun than in the States. Cabo Wabo was at least $15-$20 more. The tequila stores are great to sample, they have a small table set up with bottles and plastic cups and the store employees are usually very helpful. I bought tequila and a great Mayan blend at the Mayan village on the way to Chichen Itza. It was a hit with my friends in the US. I will be buying a bigger bottle in a month when I return to Cancun. If you wrap the bottle carefully it should survive. Pack ti in layers of clothing.

We just returned from Puerta Vallarta and brought 5 one liter bottles in two suitcases.....wrapped in lots of clothing they did fine, even after each being unwrapped as we checked in in the PV airport. We did buy at Walmart....Herradura Antiquo Reposado....a really nice tequilla and not sold in the US for about $20 per bottle....was a couple of dollars less at Sam's Club....I know PV is not Cancun....Also saw plenty of Petron

Tequila liqueur

I love a Tequila liqueur called Agavero. I took it as a gift to somebody in Spain, because I thought to myself What can I give to somebody who has everything? I wanted to give him something he could NOT find in Spain, and that he would like...

So I took him a bottle of Agavero.

I bought it in Mexico City, but then I forgot it at home... But fortunately I found it at the Duty Free shop at the airport... so I bought it again.

I'm glad I did, because it made the perfect gift.

Later, I got a thank you note telling me that my gift had been a big hit with his friends... a 10. I paste his comments:

"Por cierto te saludo con el licor de tequila, lo mejor que he probado eso si un poco fuerte, pero excelente despues de una comida con unos amigos, todos me dieron un 10 por ese licor GRACIAS."

"I salute you for that tequila liqueur, the best that I have ever tasted but it is a bit strong, but excellent after a meal with some friends, they all gave me a 10 for that liqueur... THANKS"

The mart that cymomtx mentioned near next to Margarritaville is a good spot to buy from I think it's called Playa Mart. Great souverner prices also. They don't have the biggest selection of tequila but have good prices. I recommend Aha Torro reposado $25 and anejo $35.

We also enjoy Agavero. I agree that it makes nice gifts because it's definitely unusual ... and the bottle is pretty. :)

Try Agavero (just a little bit as a float) in your margaritas. ¡Qué bueno!

We found tequila prices to be pretty good at the duty free stores at the Cancun airport. It's also convenient, since you don't have to lug the bottles around very far.

Ditto - 2 bottles of Crown Royal for about $40, which is just about half what it is here. Don't know whether it's watered down though. ;)

I buy all my tequila at the duty fee even my Crown Royal and Baileys Irish Cream. It is not watered down. Make sure one suitecase is not over packed because now with the new regulations when you clear customs you have to put the things in your luggage, how stupid you can have it with you for the first leg of the trip put if you are connecting you have to check it in.

Liquor from duty free shops may have to be checked!

When returning from Cabo to MSP, those passengers connecting in MSP to other cities had to retrieve their checked luggage and go through customs in MSP. If they had purchased liquids including duty free liquor at the airport in Cabo, the could not carry it on the plane from MSP to their final destination, since they had to leave the security area to check in again for their domestic connecting flight. This may not be true of all airports.

I ended my flight in MSP, but I would have had no space in my checked luggage for any 3 oz.+ bottles of liquids, had I needed to travel further.
