I remember doing my Daughter's tax return on Turbo Tax a number of years ago. She worked while her Husband was in Medical School. She earned about $17,000, had taxes withheld of about $750 and got a refund of about $7,500. I thought there was a mistake but finally figured out that she hit the "Sweet Spot" with the Earned Income Credit...

I remember getting that when we were young, I was in school, DW was working (at the university, so I had staff parking stickers) and getting government cheese and butter (which was REALLY good!). In our case it really was a hand up.
