I am starting this thread to share my expereince trying to get rid of our Tahiti Village timeshare and hoping some others who have or are currently going through the process can share their expereience since there does not seem to be a lot of information out there..
We own a Moorea Unit, ( a 1 BR) every odd year. Can book any day of the year. and it is part of the RCI points system and gives 42,000 pts each odd year.
The yearly MX fee is $379 and then there is the RCI member fee of $233/yr , so the annual bill currently is $602
We bought this in about 2006 when the resort was brand new and still being expanded. We paid off the mortagage in a few years and after that it was a pretty good deal for us, back then the Total annual bill was about $400 and we used the RCI system and traded our week evey year to go to other places. It had good trade value, some places we got a 2 br unit even though our unit is a 1 BR. ( one thing they didn't lie about at the presention, they told us it would trade well because it was in Vegas). At some point they teamed up with RCI and offered owners to come for a free weekend in Vegas, the usuallly perks, of show tickets and dinners etc, to " just come in and listen to the offer" ,, you don't have to change your current plan if you don't want to. Well we went, and long story short they convinced us that changing our ownership to the RCI pts plan was a good deal.. Of course we had to pay the "upgrade fee" , ( I think it was about $2400.)
We always traded our week with RCI to go to other places so the RCI pts system sounded pretty good. I remember them telling us how we could get way more than one week by using points because many palces were way less the 42000 pts we got. I'm sure may of you have heard these pitches. There was a little truth to what they said, you can use points to get cheap weeks and you can break up your time, maybe good just for 4 days etc. But later when I looked for deals like they showed us, they were not that easy to find and not as plentyful... But I will honestly say the points system does give you more flexibility than having to use just 1 week each year. You can carry your unused pts to the next year..
So all in all, we were happy with the timeshare and good value out of it.
However, now 20 years later life has changed. I retire in 1 year and I recently had a big pay cut at my job. I got the annual bill in Dec and I just started thinking, the last time we used the timeshare was 5 years ago.. I don't want to keep paying $600 /yr for something we don't use any more. So I started to research how to get rid of it.
I read the advice from other threads on Tug and also found https://tarda.org/ There is a lot of good info on there too about how to get rid of your timeshare.
I will post how my process is going and update it as new info happens . Hopefully there are others that can add their expereiences with dealing with Tahiti Village, which is run by Soleil Management
I will post what has happened so far below.....
