Tablet or...

IPads are the Cadillacs of tablets, but at Cadillac prices.

That is, if you are an Apple fan.

Of course I don't like Cadillacs either. ;)

I agree with Jim on the Kindle Fire. I bought my first one when they first came out a few years ago and got another one a few months ago. My wife uses my older one now. I use it for all the things that Jim listed plus I have the office app on it. The display is very clear and bright.

Thanks John, and I might add that one of the things I like (and yes I AM an Amazon cheerleader) is having a Kindle Fire, and Amazon Prime ($100 yr) which gives access to some 30,000 movies & TV shows, a free ebook every month, access to a book lending library, the ability to store ALL your photos, movies, and Amazon content FREE on the cloud, so it is shareable between devices and when you upgrade Kindle devices, it will come with your content already on it and able to just start up right where you left off with the old one. Oh, and no charge 2nd day shipping of everything you buy on Amazon.

If you use Amazon at all, it's kind of a no-brainer.

Oh and I see you have an Echo. They are made for each other.

Jim

thanx

Thanx all for the responses, ideas, and comments. I already have a kindle, and have considered getting her one, but she is a technophobe. That means if anything with an on/off button has a glitch, she calls me. However, since we are both retired now, it's much easier for me to answer those calls. ;)

So I am leaning towards the fire HD, but there is still plenty of time before Christmas, so I am still willing to consider other suggestions.

Thanx again,
Ron

After I got my Samsung dh was going to get a tablet. Then someone gave him a Kindle (don't know which one) and he decided that had all the capability he needed.

Amazon is selling the "Fire HD" 7" tablet for $49.99 right now and it is supposed to go down to $35 later this week. Personally I far prefer the 7" because it fits well in my hand. They also have 8" and 10" "Fire" tablets at a higher price. Amazon renamed their tablets dropping the "Kindle" from their name. Their tablets are also pretty rugged.

Exactly. That is the problem with all of Apple's products.

Apple cost more because of the software it offers, like Find Friends, find my iPad, keychain, etc.... Like I said earlier, most people don't use it. So for the average user that wants to pay less, go with an Android tablet. I like the newer Samsung tablets and 10 inch is the best size around the house.

Good point, except for the fact that similar software exists for Android as well.

A new Nexus 7 is $129 on Amazon. And a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 is $119. Now that's cheap!

I just purchased the Amazon Fire 7" tablet for $34.99. You can unsubscribe to the special offers for $15.00 which I did on my Fire tablets. This is a great price for a good tablet.

I ordered 2 Fires this morning on Amazon and the expected delivery date was 12/22! We are leaving for a short vacation on 12/23. My husband and son went to Best Buy and they have lots of them there for the same price so they picked up 2 and I cancelled my Amazon order. I did order cases on Amazon, though, that were in the $10-$15 range. I don't think I will mind the special offers. I have them on my paper white, and they only show in the locked screen. Don't know how the set up is on Fire, but I assume it is the same. I intend to keep my paper white for reading books and use the Fire for internet.

The special offers are the same on the Fire.

I ordered two Fires for $35 each yesterday morning and I'm supposed to get them
Next Wednesday. I'll keep one in our storage tote on Kauai and keep one for a
Backup.

So we got them and I am using mine right now! Having fun with it!

They evidently have sold a ton of the Fire 7" tablets because the delivery date is now all the way out to December 23d.

I just got an email that my two Fires will come tomorrow. I'm sure they sold
A lot of them. I just checked my app and it says in stock on 12-19-15. I got a
Fire stick too so I'll have some new toys tomorrow.:D

Yep, that makes sense.

Amazon has their Kindle Fire on a Black Friday special for $35. It's a small 7" screen though and availability may be limited, plus it's last year's model. That's a good price to get her started (for $35 - regularly $50). That will do Skype.

The fire on sale for 34.99 is the 2015 model, only 8g, but can take a sd card up to 128g. Great deal!

Yep, it's the new one. Just playing with it now. Got the Fire Stick hooked up too. I
Had to get a longer cable because it had problems reading the WIFI from behind the
TV set. When I moved of out front it worked great. DW is Prime member and she
Shared it with me so now we can use the Prime membership on our main TV. I don't
Think we'll be getting rid of Dish yet though.

I'm impressed with both items. I'm going to keep one of these Fires in my tote on
Kauai and I may get another Fire Stick to leave there too but we don't watch much TV
There though.

I don't think you can beat this Fire for $35. Keeping the pictures on the cloud for free
Is a great feature too.
