Elon Musk announced that T-Mobile phones will be the first to have no 'dead zones' and will connect to the internet from everywhere. No special equipment is required. So far hundreds of satellites are already circling in low Earth orbit and many hundreds more will be added. Musk says that one company has been selected in each country to start the project for the first year, and others would follow over time.

We should know soon enough. It seems there are some 1700 cell-enabled satellites on station now, aiming for several thousand. So don't expect full service on day one. We had Starlink on our Iceland/Greenland cruise and it worked flawlessly, but that used the ship's systems to repeat the signals to phones/TVs, etc. not directly to cell phones.

Nephew is a big shot at a Midwestern Internet Service Provider
The ISP is connecting Starlink satellite farms to backhaul data from the orbiting satellites
He says the amount of data which will be carried through their connections is massive
Has required a total rework of the ISP system to accommodate data
Starlink is just getting started
The availability of internet anywhere in the world at anytime is a game changer
To be able to use wifi for phone calls on your mobile phone anywhere in the world will also be a game changer
The next problem will be how to time rockets moving objects from earth to high orbit through the maze of satellites zipping around without hitting one

It's a love hate thing for me. I enjoy having the internet available everywhere except in the great outdoors. With the internet available, all of the kids and most of the adults I know will be on their phones instead of enjoying activities. Me and my pump up one shot bb gun will need to step up our game it seems.

I did notice that Spotify was working in my Jeep on the Naches Pass Trail a couple of days ago. I did like that. So I guess it isn't all bad.

I noticed that it stated that T-Mobile will start by using Starlink for text messaging in out-of-service areas. Expanding to voice and data is planned for the future.
