Does anyone have advice on how to chose lodging within a reasonable walk of the main train stations in Lucerne, the Jungfrau region and Zermatt? We were hoping to rent via VRBO or Airbnb but a trip idea for two couples has now morphed into eight of us. DH and I have visited all these areas, but planning for two is much simpler.

Also looking for suggestions on reasonable hotels as with so many of us, that may be the only option for lodging.

Some properties will say "near the station" but unless you're arriving at a weird time, why not just Uber to the place? If you want you research the location, you'll have to ask for street name or landmark, and then use Google Maps to see where they are.

In Zermatt we are planning to stay at the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Not cheap during ski season but under certain conditions (snow?) they will pick you up at the train station in a horse drawn carriage. (Bucket list item so worth a splurge!) Otherwise they have a bus. I was able to find better rates via Club1 and Google flights.

My younger dd and I are planning a trip to Switzerland next May. We plan to stay in Geneva for a few days, then Zurich for about a week. We picked hotels in both cities that are close to the train stations as we plan to do day trips by train. I had stayed at the Marriott in Zurich with dh some years back and we decided on that. It's a bit pricey, but what we wanted. I picked the one in Geneva by looking at Google maps and seeing how far hotels were from the train station. I tend to use Booking.com a lot and that's who we booked the Geneva hotel through.

Like Luanne, I also use booking.com a lot, precisely because it displays good maps. I did end up using airb&b for Lucerne. But I didn't have to plan for 8 travelers, so I don't have a recommendation, otherwise I'd pass it on. But you may be able to find a couple of apartments close to each other; there's a nice neighborhood right across the river from old town and prices were pretty reasonable comparatively.

In Jungfrau region: in a town like Murren, nothing's too far from the train station, unless you're up the mountain. I found a very decent private rental there but again, it couldn't house 8. Good luck!

Luzern train station is only a few blocks from the water and centrally located. Lots of options nearby but depending on luggage you might want a taxi.

BTW, be sure to visit https://www.rosengart.ch/ - great museum.

Many of the hotel booking sites have a 'map view' button which helps visualize what is close.

Using Google maps, I to pin down on the main train station.
Then use the "Nearby" button to bring up hotels and zoom in.
We found good walk-to hotels that way (but have used taxis).

One (not cheap...but ssooo worth it) option in Zermatt is Chalet Nepomuk. We stayed there in 2016. You can rent a 3 or 4 bedroom unit. It is da BOMB...!! Greatest view of the Matterhorn from the balcony or hot tub (and Nicole (and her family) live on site and are tremendous hosts).

It is "up the hill" from downtown (a good 10 minute walk) but there is an electric bus stop not far away.

I cannot recommend this place enough...

Cheers!

My latest thought is to ask each couple to chose a town, Lucerne, Lugano, Zermatt and/or Grindelwald and do the research for lodging and sights. Decided with my planning partner that hotels would be the better choice since each couple would have our own bathroom. Whew!
Current thinking is Lucerne 2 nights, Gotthard boat/train to Lugano for an overnight, Centovalli Scenic Railway to Zermatt 2 nights, train to Grindelwald for 2 or 3 nights and Golden Pass connecting to train to departure city with hotel there for next day's flights back to the US..
