Swim caps

I've recently taken up lap swimming again, and keep trying to find a swm cap which actually keeps my hair dry, or reasonably so. Does this exist? I've tried several including latex and silicone, but I might as well go without. Has anyone else found one they can recommend?

My daughter has swam on swim team for several years, and I have never seen or heard of a swim cap that will actually keep the hair dry -- that is not the purpose of them. But I suppose there could be one out there...

Most of the swimmers prefer the silicone caps, BTW.

Don't really think swim caps are made to keep your hair dry, but are used to reduce resistance while swimming and keep hair out of the filter.
 
They used to exist for the purpose of keeping the hair dry; they were not the same as the ones for racing. The keep-your-hair-dry ones were made of a thicker material, rubber I think, and have a gasket or baffle (is that the right word?) around the edges to keep the water out.

This brings back memories. I had swim caps with the big rubber flowers back in the 60-70s. Maybe it was because my hair was below my waist, so there was just too much of it, but the caps never kept my hair dry. They did however help keep it from becoming a mass of knots while swimming. When I figured out that by braiding it before swimming had the same results I quit wearing the cap, mostly because of the big rubber flowers.
 
Anyone remember when back in the day, swim caps were mandatory if you went swimming in a public pool? To much hair clogging up the filter system I think was the reason why.

That was great when I was at the stage in my life where I did not have to spend 100-150 dollars every 6 weeks or so to keep up my hair color. I have been aquasizing and that has helped keep my color a bit longer. When I went back to university for my master's degree 10 years ago I wanted to be known for my brains and not my beauty:cheer: so I let myself go grey. A few years ago I went back to coloring my hair. The main reason was my hairdresser was retiring and she was able to give me the funky look I needed to make my grey hair look modern and fresh. I did not have the energy to look for a new hairdresser but as I get closer to retirement I will go back to natural. First I need a great hairdresser that knows how to cut my hair.

Me too. As a child I was a competitive swimmer, and when I have access to a good lap pool I swim and swim till I'm in "the zone". I have a tiny waterproof radio that Speedo used to sell; clip it on to my suit, put in the earplugs, and I can swim to music. :)

Unfortunately the pools at the Y etc are icky, especially the locker rooms :(

I so want a lap pool with our next house....I've been saying that for the last three houses :(

I am in Heaven this July

This is not an advertisement but in the summer we go to Vancouver Island and stay at a place called Inn off the Sea near Yellowpoint. It is a former timeshare system which went into receivership many years ago. Now it is individually owned and we have rented there for 6 years. Why I love it is it has a beautiful pool cantelevered over a cliff on the ocean. Every morning I am there swimming under the blue sky, near the ocean and it is the closest I am to being in heaven (besides being near my sweet husband of course) That is the only time I do not wear a swimcap. It does not fit into my dream of what heaven can be:rolleyes:
 
At least one European timeshare requires swim caps to use the pool. They say hygiene is the reason but I really don't understand that. Hair in the filter (ie: maintenance issue) I can. At least one European public pool requires men to wear speedos. I don't understand that either. I couldn't find any restrictions on women's suits though (ie: must be one piece, etc.). Anyone care to enlighten me?

Requires Speedos? As opposed to what for goodness sake? Trunks, or nada?
 
I guess! It's a public pool in Paris. 2 years ago we were going (which we did) with another family (which is the part that didn't happen) and I was researching things to do with a bunch of young kids. A day at the pool was an idea. When I read the pool info it said that men had to wear speedos. Nothing about women's wear requirments, nothing about swim caps, just men and speedos. I thought it was weird. Since it ended up being just me and my daughter, we didn't go so I have no idea if the regs were enforced or not.

The swim cap requirement is at Fitzpatrick Castle where we stay for a week this summer. Apparently they sell caps at the resort - I didn't see a price for them listed but I could call and ask :rolleyes:

I would recommend the water gear swim caps. Just opt for silicone caps, if keeping the hair dry is your first priority.

This is so much harder than it really should be, isn't it? I totally get the not having energy to find a new hairdresser....I have lots of curly hair, and I find it's even more difficult. I've had to do it a few times in my life, and it was always a struggle to find hairdresser who really knew how to work with naturally curly hair.

Sorry that I sounded like the Peanuts character for a second....
