Hi Everyone. I guess this is my lucky week for trades. Yesterday, I got a trade into Ocean Pointe for next 4th of July (two units at that) and I just found out I got an Easter week trade into SurfWatch for this coming Easter week! I am so excited as I love Hilton Head. Oddly enough, when I owned DVC points for Hilton Head, we went for three years in a row over Easter week. I could never afford a full week so we went for five days. The weather ended up being too cool and wet so we stopped but we have missed being in Hilton Head for Easter the past couple of years. So excited to go back.

Can anyone tell me what is near (i.e. shopping, grocery) to surfwatch? Also, where is this resort compared to the Disney property? I though Surfwatch was across the street from that older shopping plaza in Hilton Head. Don't know the name of it but it has an independent movie theater that shows odd film titles and there are a lot of small unique stores in there. In map questing Surfwatch, I no longer think it is near that shopping center but is SurfWarch near any other shopping areas.

I'm just excited to know what this resort is located near but regardless, the place looks so NICE. Can we bike/walk to anything worth while.

Although it was not ocean front, I really liked the Disney resort because there was so much you could bike to. I loved being able to bike to a Publics, Fudruckers, a minature golf place and the beach from the Disney property. From what I can tell from the reviews and pictures, SurfWatch is even better than the Disney property, though thre is no pool slide.

Any info will help and as always thanks.

...and I must admit. I was very disapointed with Marriott because in the 10 months or so we have been owners, I was not able to get a Marriott trade via an ongoing search. Then, just this week, I got two 4th of July units into OceanPointe for next 4th of July (a two bedroom and one bedroom which I got by locking off my 2012 4th of July Willowridge week) then just today I got a two bedroom Easter week SurfWatch with the one bedroom portion of my Willowridge summer week (I think it was week 29 from this summer, 2011). I'm new to this trading game but I am finally happy with Marriott. I still did not get my summer OceanWatch or Hilton Head week but I'm not complaining.

There really is nothing across the street from SurfWatch at Burkes Beach road. Shelter Cove (where DVC is located) is a five minute drive down to the left. I am sure you are familiar with that shopping center. Down to the right past Port Royal is another shopping center with a Sams and Piggly Wiggly (as I recall). I make the 10-15 minute drive to Publix off to the left of the traffic circle at the main entrance to Sea Pines. Some of the grocery stores are really dirty.

We have ridden bikes from SurfWatch to Sea Pines (Harbortown) and to the Salty Dog. As I recall it is more than 16 miles roundtrip. There is a tunnel under 278 down to the left (toward Sea Pines) which gets you to Shelter Cove as I recall.

BTW. If you decide taking a left from Burkes Beach out onto 278 is too much, you can go though Chaplin Park via Castner and there is a light at Singleton.

SurfWatch has added some nice touches recently with a horseshoe pit and multiple fire pits. We were there at the end of March and again in late June. Hope that helps.

jdunn1,

wsrobinson has given some good advice. Surfwatch is around the 7 mile marker (mid- island) about a mile further south than Barony. You are close to the Piggly Wiggly and the Fresh Market (if you head south), and the Harris Teeter and Publix (if you go north)- we prefer the Publix- its in the shopping center with the Barnes and Noble near the Wal-mart. I wouldn't drive all the way down to Sea Pines since these other grocery stores are so much closer.

I agree that if you are trying to turn left onto 278 go to the light since it can be a difficult left. Just drive through Chaplin park to Singleton Road and the light is by the Exxon with the diner.

Biking to shelter cove is very easy since they have the tunnel under 278, and we've biked to the DVC beach house when friends were staying there- also very easy to get to. The trails go all over the island so you can really go anywhere. We like to ride to Barony also and you can stop and use their market and charge it to your room at Surfwatch. Also you can bike to Carrabas and the arcade/mini-golf there.

By the time you go they will have just finished a soft goods refurb and so you will see new couchs/curtains/etc. Looks nice from the plans that they showed us.

We go there at Easter and usually the weather is great. The pools are all heated so you can swim, though the ocean may be too cool (people do swim but we like it a little warmer usually).

Have fun! tlwmkw

Hi wsrobinson and tlwmkw. You both have been graet and have given me exactly the information I wanted to know. Sounds like a great place to stay on the Island. I just had it in my mind that Surf Watch was across from Colignay (sp) Plaza, as I remember there were a lot of resorts across the street from that plaza. I know exactly where Surf Watch is, now. I think there is only one movie theater that shows current releases on Hilton Head Island and I saw a movie there, before. I do remember the Sam's Club or Walmart or whatever else is in that plaza, now. Is that plaza within easy biking distance? Looks like maybe it is less than a mile away?

How nice that we will have newer couches and bedding and stuff. My confirmation did say there was "construction" at the resort until March or something. That must be what the construction is.

I have one more question. As Surfwatch guests, can we use the pools at Barony? No big deal, but I read that Baranoy is getting a three story pool slide?

Thanks.

-Jim

cannot use Barony facilities. Only owners and Barony occupying guests can use. HH Marriotts have no reciprocal use, and shouldn't.

Wristbands are required and they are checking all day, every day.

jdunn1,

I don't think you can use the pools at Barony if you're not staying there. If you're an owner then I think you can get a day pass but there has been discussion about this and it seems to depend on the time of year and how busy it is. There have been reports of wrist bands at Barony recently- we were there in June and no wrist bands but maybe it started after we were there when it began to get busy. As it is the pool that is getting the slide (the garden villa pool) isn't currently heated so unless they are planning to start heating it you might not want to use it at Easter anyway.

Thanks tlwmkw. While I appreciate the other person who told me this, I think I offended them or something by just asking.

I am an ex DVC owner and pool hopping was one of our perks. As DVC grew that perk got restricted. I never pool hopped before and doubt I would even wanted to once I get to SurfWatch but you can bet I will be checking out Barony and Grand Ocean and probably the other Marriott properties. I like exploring when I am on vacation and Hilton Head is perfect for doing that kind of stuff.

...by the way. I just noticed your post from some time ago about DC program successful reservations. I see that you will be at SurfWatch this coming Easter with me. I'm not sure who all is going on my end but you can bet there will be a few toddlers with me.

Enjoy your trip, too.

I would say Surfwatch hands down has the most beautiful units of anything HHI has to offer. Certainly the nicest for Marriott.

Unfortunately once we left the unit we were disappointed with everything else at Surfwatch.

I hope you like it better than we did. We were desperate to try to get out of our week at MGO that checked in today, due to a swim meet. Yet we still passed on trading someone our MGO for their surfwatch. Even though it was the exact week our good friends are there.

To each his own. It was disappointing to us.

I cutrrently own at DVC Hilton HEad and own in HAwaii Marriott and trade out every year for HH. Surfwatch is our favorite resort (and we have stayed at them all). We like it due to the neighborhood and seclusion, which is exactly why some would not like it. At Mathews drive there is a Bi-lo, which doubles coupons. and a little up there is a walmart and publix. the walmart does not have grocery section, just some grocery stuff. You will be a few miles up from shelter cove and piggly wiggly, but Bi-lo is closer. check out the location at bi-lo.com

There is not much as far as close restaurants, but they have grills.

There is a chinese place in pineland plaza which is good for lunch. The hard part about HH is the no signs on the road, which often make it hard to find things!

I would take yor GPS with you. Put in where you want to go. It will make your stay easy. As posted here, no road signs and the trees and plants block your view. Enjoy

Thanks everyone. I have been to Hilton Head three times before. I owned points (not nearly enough) at the DVC Hilton Head property and loved it, but I have only been there over Easter, never summer. I love being there over Easter. Coming from the Cleveland area, I look at trips to Hilton Head for Easter as a nice way to say goodbye to the cold and it gets me excited for summer.

I really like the Disney property except that it isn't ocean front. I will never understand why Disney didn't find ocean front property. Marriott doesn't seem to have a probem finding ocean front property. Regardless, I do like the location of the Disney resort becuase there is so much you can bike to from the resort and I think it is a very relaxing and perfectly themed resort. We had three very nice, but sometimes cold Easters at the Disney resort.

I'm looking forward to getting back to Hilton Head but I thought SurfWatch was in a different location, by a tourist shopping area I can't remember the name of. I've been to the movie theater I think is near SurfWatch and that Walmart but is Surfwatch within easy biking distance or walking distance to those places. If I remember right, the Walmart is a couple miles, but not more than four miles or so from the Disney property so SurfWatch sound kind of close to the Shelter Cove area of Hilton Head.

Will definately have my GPS with us. Funny you mention the signs. I remember having the hardest time finding the Disney property because it is behind a parking lot and then behind a small resort area and there were turn abouts and the signs were so confusing.

Thanks very much for the info. Sounds like a great resort.

Surfwatch to Shelter Cove is just about 2 miles (on Rte 278).

Surfwatch to WalMart is about 3.5 miles (depends on path)...
