We are heading to the area for the first time this Feb. We really don't know much about the area except that it has beautiful beaches and most people like the West Coast of Florida.

Any suggestions as to must sees, etc. would be welcomed....

Mote Aquarium
Selby Gardens
Myakka State Park - will see alligators; hiking trails
St. Armands Circle (for high end shopping and great restaurants and to "people watch")
Downtown Sarasota - lots of great restaurants and small local shops, but parking can be a real hassle. Great outdoor market on Saturday mornings.
Siesta Key Beach - rated #1 beach. Get there early in morning (before 10AM), or you won't find any parking!

I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions.

Feel free to PM me with specific questions.

They also have discount evening admission on Thursday, which includes the Circus Museum. I don't think the free Monday does.

The Circus Museum was a real treat for us. We had seen the miniature circus at the 1982 World's Fair. The creator has continued working on it constantly since he donated it to the museum, so it is even more incredible now.

The only downside was that it was dark by the time we arrived and we didn't get to enjoy the grounds.

the miniature is fantastic. we go tot he art museum on monday and see the rest of the place on another day, between the house the miniature, the grounds, and the circus museum it takes all day.
