Sunset Pointe-What building to request?

Will be staying at Sunset Point in May. Have all the buildings been refurbished? What is the best building to request for view and quiet purposes? Thanks....Susan:)

We stayed there last fall and although it is a small resort, the staff was friendly and the place was nice. I can't say that the rooms are "newly refurbished", but we felt everything was in good shape.
Ask to stay in a building "with a view of Broad Creek" and also ask for a 1st floor unit. They have elevators and luggage carts, but I found that the trees are all so mature, that they block the view of the water.
There are two swimming pools and a nice BBQ area. Bike rentals on and about the island are fairly expensive. But not so at Sunset....they were always offering a deal on 1-2 or 3 day rentals. Quite reasonable too.
This is just my opinion.

There are only two Sunset Pointe buildings, Marsh Point (Bldg 3) and Sunset (Bldg 5). Of the two, I would pick Sunset for both a quiet location and the best views. It is on the end of the resort, overlooking the small pool with Broad Creek beyond.

There are three other buildings in the complex, but they belong to Harbour Point and the inventory is separate.

Enjoy your stay!

I'm apparently in the minority, but we stayed at Sunset Pointe last summer for a week (traded Aruba), and were decidedly unimpressed. I guess we were expecting a resort, more like what we are used to in Aruba. Sunset Pointe is more like an apartment complex. There are no restaurants, not even drink service or anything at the pools. The pools are pretty tiny and very, very basic. The grounds are nothing to write home about. Unit was clean, but basic. And I found the staff pretty lackadaisical, too. When I went to mention that our toaster had caught fire, they weren't interested, because it was only 7:45 and the lobby doesn't open until 8:00. Okay, then, lol.

We did really love HHI, though, and have talked about returning, but only if we can get a trade into one of the nicer Marriotts.

Just my opinion, a lot of folks seem to love the place. :)

Hi Cathy,

Having read your reviews of Sunset Pointe on TripAdvisor, in the review section here on TUG, and now your comments in this thread, I just want to respond with a few thoughts. Your expectations for Sunset Pointe were clearly not met, and that is unfortunate. No one likes to be disappointed on their vacation.

However, you appear to have set your standards for Marriott timeshares based on your experiences at MVCI resorts in Aruba. Marriott does not offer the same level of service at their locations in the continental USA. They do not offer mid-week maid service, restaurants, or poolside service at most of their resorts. I love to stay at Grande Ocean and consider it the finest resort on Hilton Head Island, but even it does not offer these features. (There is a poolside bar by one of the pools and limited food service at lunch in one of the courtyards, but no poolside service, no maid service, and no restaurant.)

As for the Sunset Pointe swimming pools, one of them is small but the other is quite nice in both size and setting. It's certainly no smaller than the oceanfront pool at Marriott's newest HHI resort, SurfWatch.

In regards to the staff, is it really that unreasonable to expect you to wait to exchange out your toaster until the lobby was open? How is that worthy of laughing out loud (LOL)?

As a Four Seasons owner, I know and enjoy great service. At Four Seasons, there is daily maid service, poolside service, and wonderful amenities. But, even there, the lobbies in the Residence Clubs are closed overnight.

I just think you are being a little harsh on Sunset Pointe. Yes, it is older and less fancy than Grande Ocean, Barony, and SurfWatch...but it meets the brand standards for Marriott. Indeed, a lot of the things you found lacking at Sunset Pointe are also lacking at most other Marriott timeshares.

Steve,

I agree with you completely. It is not fair to compare Sunset Pointe with the Marriotts in Aruba. I am frankly shocked more research is not done before trading into any resort, so the disappointment of no restaurant, large resort style pool, lobby hours, etc. would be no surprise.
The units are extremely nice, and the location on Broad Creek is fantastic.

To the OP....I would request the Sunset Building 5. And ask for the top floor....I don't think the trees are blocking the view to Broad Creek. Enjoy!!
