ha ha.
You're all right: the star boats cook on-board. The smaller boats (I'm 99% certain) cater. For dinner cruise...the star line is well worth the extra $$$. But, I'm not so sure I don't agree with D. as well; the boat dinner--even at sunset--won't be as good as land-lubber fare...but the view is certainly spectacular. We did both cruises (day small boat Capt Andy's and sunset dinner on the Star with Capt Andy) and thoroughly enjoyed them both. I enjoyed the Star boat more, but the day-time cruise was a better experience.
We were very much concerned with the question of 'will the boat go to the Napali coast or seek calmer waters due to wave height? We really wanted to 'only' go if the boat did the Napali route. In retrospect, the alternate route might have been better--the sea state was a bit much for a nice dinner. Those without sea-legs were not very happy night. I, on the other hand, cheerfully sat at the bar in the salon (looking to stern) and thoroughly enjoyed my med-rare stake, red wine and lilikoi cheesecake. The shrimp were likewise quite tasty. Many, including DW, took their dinner to go.....
January is not the quietest time on the south/southwestern coast of Kauai.... Just sayin.
Cheers!
