From my misbegotten and wayward youth ..... this was my all-time favorite Addams Family episode. Gomez blowing up the trains. ("Of course. What else would a grown man do with trains?") To Wednesday coming home in tears from her first day in school because the knight in shining armor killed the dragon. At 22:00, "thinking like yours could save the world."

There had been nothing like this on TV since Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Yep. The hierarchy for me was:

  • Full first name. ("Stephen" instead of "Steve")
  • Full first name + middle name
  • Full first name + middle name + Last name.
  • Expanded middle name only ("Jonathan" instead of "John")
I quickly learned that I should never, ever get to a point where I was addressed using Jonathan).

I'd know I was in real trouble because my mom would use my first and middle names, sometimes adding on the last as well. While my transgressions were benign by comparison, it would make me think of particularly heinous serial killers - they're often mentioned in the media as Firstname Middlename Lastname. Average criminals are usually just Firstname Lastname.

One of the worst, Theodore Robert, just went by the snappy nickname Ted (Bundy). John Wayne Gacy got the full treatment.
