Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Hi,

It is operated by the Circle Line but is different from their regular three hour tour around Manhattan for which they are famous.

That's it on the options.

John

Circle Line is the only one allowed to stop at each island. To just cruise by, there are other options including the free Staten Island ferry.

There was a wood walkway bridge from Jersey City near the old Central Jersey (B & O ) RR Terminal ferry connections off Johnson Street. But they didn't allow public use in the past, and know I think it is rotting away.

I would take to boat to both. Take the tour of Ellis Island, and bring any info you have on the family background. They have discs with tons of family info. Your families info may be there. Interesting places....(there are SOOO many in the area, you might need many weeks)

SunStarved,

You can get the Circle Line Ferry to Ellis Island and/or the Statue of Liberty from either Battery Park in lower Manhattan or Liberty Park, NJ
for more info on Circle Line Ferry schedules from either location, see this
link

Also, if you want other Circle Line Tours, see the Sticky at the top of the Tug Eastern Forum and scroll down to the Circle Line Link - this is a different link and gives info about tours from their Terminal Dock on 42nd Street.

My family entered this country around 1920 through Ellis Island. Do you know if their info is on the web?

Thanks for the replies, I have my timed tickets to the monument and the ferry tickets paid for.

How much time total would you allow for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island? Our timed tickets to the Statue allow entry from 12:45 to 3:45, and it says to get in the ferry line two hours before the start of your timed ticket.

Be careful what you bring with you, it's just like flying. My friend had his leatherman tool taken.

So you can't bring any liquid (water) ? That'll be hard four potentially hours of wait. Thanks for the reminder.

The security check is just before you board the ferry, so during the longest wait you can have whatever you want to drink in line.

Are the lines and wait times shorter leaving from New Jersey or NYC? Or are they about the same? Is there a quieter time of day and/or day of the week to go?

Thanks,

Steve

I've read that the lines are shorter on the NJ side -- but the departures aren't as frequent so the wait could be longer depending on your timing. If it's convenient for you, it's worth checking into for sure. The earlier you can go the better -- the lines only get longer!
