Is anyone familiar with both resorts or areas?

We aren't golfers so that's not something we care about.

I'm holding reservations for both resorts in a one bedroom unit. We've never stayed at either resort so I'm looking for input to help me choose.

We stayed at Star Pass several years ago and loved it! We had a 2 bedroom unit…very spacious with a nice patio.. There’s a very nice, large outdoor pool if you like to swim. The resort is in a quiet area but easy to drive to restaurants, museums, etc.
I haven’t been to the Legacy in Phoenix so can’t comment on that, but I would definitely go back to Starr Pass !

There's a big difference between Phoenix and Tucson. When and why are you going?

Last week of September and first week of October. It's two weeks and we could stay a week at each but don't want to move. We'll have had three 2 night stays in the long drive getting us from where we live in southeastern Florida and will be ready to stay in one place for a while.

I really thought we miss not being able to book one night stays more than we do. When we're driving 8-12+ hours in a day, it takes more out if us in our seventies than it did when we were in our sixties, lol. Having a day to recover before doing it again is a good thing for us now.

We haven’t stayed at Starr Pass yet, but it’s good to hear that it’s a nice place. We have stayed at Legacy several times and are going again in Feb. next year. We love it. Very spacious suites, some are nicely updated and it seems they are working their way through the property to update all. Bathrooms are huge, double sinks and large vanities, separate toilet and shower room. Full kitchen, comfortable living room, huge dining table. Patio or deck areas off every unit, depending on whether you’re on main floor or upstairs. No elevators, though, so moving in and out on second floor units can be taxing, depending on how much stuff you bring. We are not golfers, so not interested in that amenity, but it seems very popular with locals. Pickle ball courts, lovely large pool complex, restaurant and pro shop in main bldg., exercise equipment room in check-in bldg.
Walkable area within the complex and outside heading south…and a nice park that we drive to for walking away from roads. Not too far from anything, we find it to be well located with lots of shopping/dining options not too far away…Costco/Sam’s/CVS, etc. nearby.
We were amused by the driverless (Waymo?) taxis winding through the Legacy parking lot…guess they were being tested and refined last year….saw several on the city streets in the Phoenix area.
We feel right at home there. Front desk personnel have always been very pleasant and helpful. Just have to gird your loins and be firm if you want to avoid the “update” hounds…unless you’re looking for some gifting to kill some time!

It’s more of a choice between Tucson and Phoenix and off resort activities that you may want to do. Having stayed at both, both would work though Starr pass is tad more secluded and longer drive to everything including restaurants. Drove there from south east Florida and have an idea where those three stops are. 😂

If you don’t mind another couple hundred mile drive as a side trip, hit the beaches of Puerto Penasco/Rocky point for a few days in Mexico. Drive inside Mexico is about 60 miles from Lukeville AZ crossing. As it’s isolated from rest of Mexico, it’s in the official “free zone” and does not require paperwork if in a personal car(not rental) . Grab a cheap one month insurance online. If you are leery of driving in this strip of Mexico, trust me, it’s way easier than the madness of I95 during snowbird season.

Jan. My pick is legacy, I've stayed there several times. Its a beautiful resort in the middle of a golf course. A restaurant bar is located on the resort. Food is okay and the beer is always cold. The farm is next door if you want a farm to table fresh meal.
The Farm at South Mountain https://share.google/TTFwKWug8krc66W7P
Late Sept and Oct is normally monsoon season in Phoenix otherwise temps are perfect at that time of year.

We haven't stayed at either of these resorts but did consider them before we booked two resorts for a total of one week next April.

We stayed in Tucson and visited Suguaro National Park and drove up the big mountain about 20 years ago. Also we've been to Sedona three times, the most recent May 2024.

We like Sedona for the beauty, hiking, town, and jeep tours but not for a whole week. So after flying into PHX we will drive to Tucson and stay in Wyndham Rancho Vistoso for 3 days. I just felt that the location worked better for us than Star Pass. Then we can take our time getting to Wyndham Sedona for 4 days.

I looked at Phoenix a number of times and couldn't determine what we could do there that would take more than 1 day.

I haven’t stayed at either but I have stayed in both cities numerous times as relatives lived in both places. We love to visit historic places and nature sites. Tucson has enough within driving distance to fill two weeks. Never found that much near Phoenix to do and the traffic was awful.
Historic sites going south, such as Tubac, tucumcari, mission San Xavier de Balzac,
Sabino and Madera canyons,
Pima air and space museum,
two observatories, one west and one south,
lovely museums and parks, and going east, kartchner cave, bisbee and Tombstone.
Saquara national monument. Titan Missile Museum
Tohona Chul Park, Tucson Mountain Park, , botanical Gardens, the Biosphere, the boneyard and memorial museums. The university campus with museums.

Definitely the Pima County Air Museum. We spent an entire day viewing and photographing old aircraft. Think the the Constellation that was President Eisenhower's Air Force-1 for example.

Never stayed at either resort, but I find Tuscon better, personally. Phoenix is a pretty big city, traffic sucks, there isn't much there for me personally. but I see it's draw for others. It's also closer to Sedona and the Grand Canyon if you want to make a (LONG, mind you) side trip to either of those places.

Legacy in Phoenix is not too far from Scottsdale, where Taliesin West is if you’re a Frank Lloyd Wright fan.
In Tucson there’s a museum not many people know about…it’s a Miniatures Museum on the north side, very amazing to see all the miniature displays….I’ve been there twice. Fascinating mix of detailed scenes.

Fwiv, at Wyndham Oro Valley right now. Having stayed at Starr Pass before, I like it more. That said it’s not on a golf course and few miles more outside town. But closer to more restaurants and attractions.
