Can anyone shed some light on how this works?

About a month ago I made a reservation request using staroptions for a property Star Central showed not available. My thought if someone cancels I will have a request in. I never received an email confirming my request (not sure that I should have). Today I checked and saw Star Central shows availability for the place I put in a request for, the exact days.

So, I guess I will call tomorrow morning, but I'm a little confused how the request process works. Thanks for any insight!

Did you log onto your acct. at mystarcentral.com and check your messages there?

You cannot wait list, unless you are a Starwood Elite Owner who owns multiple weeks in the SVN.

When you make an online request, you are just sending an email, and someone has to read it and check availability. They usually get back to you within 24 hours. If it's available, you get it right then. If not, you get nothing, and you are back to square 1 - you are not on a wait list.

Putting in a request online is not an effective way to make a reservation, (especially if it is not available using the beta tool) because you are just sending an email. Right now, the only effective way to make a Staroption reservation is to call.

My understanding of the Elite wait-list feature (we've used it a bunch of times):

You need to call them to wait-list -- I don't think you can do that any other way...

If you wait-list, they will call you if/when a unit is available. Then you have 1 business day to call them back to confirm that you will take the unit, or it goes to the next person on the wait-list, and then eventually back in to the reservations pool.

While you're on the wait-list, you can go ahead and make another booking (i.e. "a confirmed Plan B"). That booking can then be cancelled (if you don't have enough free SOs lying around) to confirm the wait-list reservation.

YYJMSP - You are correct, but the OP is not an Elite Owner, so that's not an option for them.

Correct, I am not an Elite Owner, so I can't wait list. I did not know that wasn't an option. So that explains it. I never did get an email from them, so I was kind of confused about the process. Thanks for the clarification!

What you did was an online request for a reservation (rather than wait listing) and you should have gotten a response. Did you check for a message on the website itself?

Yes I did look in the messages online and there was nothing there. The only thing I can think of was perhaps it went to my spam folder and I didn't catch it. But I was wondering if I had a request pending this whole time. At least now I know what the process is! The good news is I called early this morning and got the reservation. Thanks for the schooling on the process, all the little rules get confusing! :)
