Star Clippers cruises

Welcome home! Great trip/cruise. Definitely a nice prize to win. Ship is beautiful!!

Thanks, Anna. Someone asked me how much money what I won was worth. I checked the financials. We saved $4220 off the price of the cruise.

@DaveNV Great review, thanks I think I need to do one of these, probably in the Med....

Update: Booked it! Royal Clipper, 4 nights Rome to Rome, Sept 2025. 10% early discount ends today!!!

Perfect!!

Dave

Thanks for the wonderful review, all pertinent information clearly stated. As much as I’d wish it, such a voyage isn’t in our future, so again I’ll need to live vicariously through your reports!

Thanks. It really was great.

@DaveNV Thanks for the great update on your cruise. With a ship/boat that size did you have any problems with motion sickness?

Thanks, Luanne. None at all. The ship has stabiizers built in, so stayed pretty smooth. There was a certain amount of rocking, like on any sailing ship, but we never felt queasy. We slept well, like being rocked to sleep. :D

Hey Dave thanks for the update and wonderful photos. I'm so glad you had a nice trip. It looks very nice.

Thanks, Von. It was quite enjoyable. I think in the Med, it'd be spectacular. :D

My final out of pocket for cruise costs for two came to $2407. That included paying taxes and port fees on the cruise cost (not covered by the contest win), the voluntary cost to upgrade our stateroom, cost of transportation from and to our hotel to the ship, and onboard expenses (excursion tour, Internet, and beverage charges.) This doesn't include airfare (we used miles) or the hotel in San Jose, Costa Rica. Considering I paid a lot more than that for our cruise on Celebrity last summer, I think I'm well ahead of the game. :D

Found a fuzzy pic of part of the Dining Room on the Star Clipper. This is just one portion of the room. There was quite a bit more behind me and on the other side of the ship, that looked similar. Buffet serving section was in the center of the room. It was very comfortable.

Another pic I found. Relaxing on the stern of the ship on a sunny day.

Even our cabin steward had a sense of humor.

I came back to collect my sunglasses one morning, and was greeted by this. :D

I miss Windjammer Barefoot Cruises, where they raised the sails by hand….

I always wanted to sail on Windjammer, but never got the chance. I think their last ship was sold off a few years ago. Not sure if it's still in service somewhere.

There are two companies sailing similar ships now, both started by former passengers. Of the WBC fleet, the Mandalay (now renamed) is the only one still sailing. The Poly was rotting into the sea off Costa Rica the last heard. I sailed on her and the Lagacy; my mother had also sailed the Fantome and Flying Cloud ( the one lost in the hurricane.)

Sounds like you were definitely a fan. I think the Star Clippers ships are larger. I can't see hand-raising some of these main sails on the ship I was on. They're huge.

@DaveNV What was the dress code. We plan travelling hand luggage only so hope there isn't a need to more than smart casual clothing

Our favorite vacations were on the windjammers. We have sailed on all their ships. The fantome was luxurious with air conditioning and a bathroom with a separate shower.

The dress code was beach casual during the day, (shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops.) For dinner they asked men to wear "smart casual," e.g. a collared shirt, long pants, and shoes. Most did. I didn't see anybody being turned away, but also didn't see anyone try to wear a t-shirt or something. They had one night that was supposedly a "white party" thing, but nobody knew in advance about it, so I didn't see many people wearing only white. We had no white clothing with us, so couldn't have participated if we'd wanted to. We wore regular smart casual to dinner, and it was fine.

We traveled with carry-on luggage only, so minimized what we took with us. I wore shorts and t-shirts every day, without issue. Now keep in mind this was a beach trip in Costa Rica. A Med cruise might have a more stringent dress code, depending on ports you'll visit.

The ship in general was very casual. This isn't a super-fancy cruise line. Royal Clipper has dry cleaning on board (I think), if you need that service. I'd contact Star Clippers at their offices and ask them, to be sure.

Have fun!

Many thanks, we can manage within that. I'm not expecting a Gala dinner on a 4 night trip, we'll see what they say in the pre-cruise info.

I expect it'd be similar in most cases. Look at the star Clippers website. There are text links at the bottom that has one titled, "Welcome Aboard Information" that talks about the Dining Room and Dress Code and whatnot.
