Anyone have any relatively recent experience with the Pelican Resort or the Ocean Club Villas? There is only one review in the last three years for Ocean Club Villas, none since 2005 for the Pelican, and those mention the need for refurb, so I'm wondering if it's been done...

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

I was at Pelican last summer (2006).

Same old Pelican except for the construction of the new building right next to the existing Marina. Comfortable enough and friendly, if a bit dowdy.

Probably my last time to St. Maarten (4 trips, 12 weeks). It's just getting too developed and crowded for my tastes.

And that's the problem with the Pelican which can't be changed, even if you rehabbed every room. The entire area around it is just too built up, all covered in concrete and asphalt.

STAY AWAY from a exchange into Pelican!!

My picks for resorts in SXM!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunterra Flamingo Beach
La Vista Beach Resort
The Atruim
Towers @ Mullet Bay
Royal Islander Club La Plage
Sunterra Royal Palm
Belair Beach Hotel
La Vista
Summit Resort
Oyster Bay Beach Resort
Royal Islander Club La Terrasse
Port DE Plaisance Resort & Casino
Caravanserai
I have stayed or look at all or these
& this is my order I would go to them!
Ones I won't stay @ are:
Pelican (stayed there 2 times NEVER AGAIN!!!)
Nettle Bay Beach Club
Sea Palace
I don't know about any of the other ones! But I still have time to go check them out!!

Thanks, Cappy and Aldo. Will definitely stay away from the Pelican! Was considering Sunterra Flamingo, but there will be noisy construction on the first floor of some buildings during our time frame, and the area also sounds very built up....

I stayed at the Pellican twice last year and had a great time. it's nice to have the casino onsite which is rare on SXM. Get a Marina Room or a room in the F Building and you're right on the water,

How come Oyster Bay is listed so far down the list? We will be going in July and everything I've read has been very positive.

Don't get me wrong..the Pelican ain't bad. I've spent 3 weeks there and enjoyed it. Very nice pools. It's just that I'm not crazy about the neighborhood. It's crowded and getting worse.

All things considered, I'd take Pelican over Flamingo, believe it or not. The rooms, if a bit dowdy, are larger and more comfortable. When I stayed at Flamingo, our 1 bedroom was so small we were tripping over each other. Our patio had a nice view of a concrete wall and some garbage cans.

My favorites on SXM are Divi and Belair, not because they are fancy, but because they are a bit isolated, beautiful, and yet within a LONG walking distance of the town of Philipsburg.

I also love Lonvilliers on the French side, but it is REAL dowdy, almost Motel 6 like, but very quiet, peaceful, and tranquil. You have to drive over the Rue Mon Dieu to get there, and so as the crow flies it's very close to Grand Case but you basically have to drive to get everywhere.

Oyster Bay? What can I say? I toured it. I can understand why some people like it, and can understand why some don't. It's about as far off the beaten path as you can still get in St. Maarten, which is good, but still a big place and the beach and the pool were crowded , which is bad. Different strokes.
