squeeky shoes

Bought Mephisto shoes for vacation walking on my next timeshare exchange. They are sturdy, leather, waterproof (gore-tex), look great and best of all--extremely comfortable.

But alas! They squeek loudly and attract unwanted attention when I walk on tile and other hard surfaces, like at home, on sidewalks or in stores. Squeek seems to arise between the soles and surface--where the rubber hits the road.

Soles are agressive, vibram-type, like with several of my other pairs of hiking shoes/boots that I use for daily health walking and day-hiking on forest trails and around town. None of these shoes, including other casual Mephistos I own, have this squeek problem.

Solution??

I have had problems with squeeky shoes, but I think it is because I use orthotic inserts. If I put baby powder between the insert and inner sole, it stops.

Thanks, Liz. I'll give it a try. I use Superfeet inserts in these and in my other shoes but have never had a squeek before. The squeek stops when I walk on a dirt trail or across the lawn, which is why I think it is a surface effect.

wd-40 . this stuff seems to fix everything. its my favorite fish attractor.
To fix your shoe squeak you need to spray it between the insole. Then you can also spray your footwear to make it shine. Go to the website for wd-40.

I keep wd-40, duct tape and super glue in my tool box.

We must own identical tool- and tackle-boxes. Haven't tried spraying my fishing worms with the stuff, but fellow hikers have suggested using either wd-40 or baby powder (as Liz suggested above) for squeeks inside shoes below the insole. I did try the baby powder (without success), which only confirmed my conclusion that the squeeks were external to the shoes.

I seriously thought of spraying my outsoles with wd-40. I think it would work, and probably with minimum slippage except on the slickest surfaces. The down side is the hell I'd pay for absent-mindedly tracking wd-40 onto the living room carpet. I'd rather hear squeeks than yells and screeches. ;)

Another hiker suggested wearing the shoes on rough-surface terrain for a few days to rough up the sole surfaces, which should help with the squeeking on tile and pavement. That's what I'll try next.

Yes sir, I spay any spinners, plugs, corkie and sometimes bait with wd-40. It kind of depends on the fishing. Sturgoen, salmon and steelhead like wd-40. I think it masks the human scent which is a big fish turn off.

Catfish bait that soaks without a hit will get a spray and sometimes a chomp right after.

Biggest Salmon is herring sprayed with wd-40.
Biggest sturgeon 17'+ was shad spayed with wd-40.

Also, we like lemon joy for cleaning tackle and hands.

Other oils in my boat are anise/crawdad, shrimp, garlic, herring, clam, and whatever the guy in the next boat is catching with.

Some guy was catching coho with the same spinner as me last year. He was using preperation H on the blade. As soon as he put a dab on our spinners it was fish on.
