I just got one of these certificates inthe mail since I have the SPG AMEX. Any tricks to using it. Is the only way you can find out how much the RACK rate is by calling them.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes - they are nearly useless. You can almost always make a Resv. on your own for less than 50% off rack rate.

Denise is right, they are nearly useless. I've never used one in 4 years. I've heard some people say that sometimes it could be useful in booking suites.

Whatever you do - do not sell it on eBay.... :hysterical:

I think it would make a great BDay present for a certain TUG Moderator.

It's been a few years, but I was able to use a SPG50 to get a much better rate than the lowest available rates at the Westin Casurina in Grand Cayman over Thanksgiving. I think it really depends on what location and season you're interested in.

They can be valuable in cities that the normal rack rates are through the roof. NYC is one example. Rack rates are $400-500 in most hotels.

They aren't worth much at US locations but can be extremely useful in Europe & Asia. I gave one of mine to a Tugger who used it for an over the water bungaloo in Bali (I think) as a special surprise for his wife. IIRC, the rate was $800 and he got it for $400.

As others have mentioned those are useful for hotel with very high rates. I know one fellow who used his for 50% off the rack rate at the St Regis in New York. I think it was still around $500/night, but that's as compared to the ~$850 he would have paid without using the certificate.
