Go for the rental car. It'll provide much more flexibility plus it'll be cheaper than paying for all the tours and getting to and from the airport.
There are 8 of us so need a mini van. How is parking for that size car?

Probably easiest in the overground car park opposite reception, rather than the underground car parks.

Parking at most places along the coast should be fine.
If you are going inland, especially to the perched white villages, that can be more challenging even in a regular car.
However, if you park at the edge of these villages and walk in it should be fine.

Easter is early in 2024, so school holidays should be finished by mid April and both resorts should be quieter.
There is more to do at Marbella, but we find it more relaxing at Playa.

Wife saw this and the looked at satellite photos of both resort. Marbella looked twice size of Playa, so we are doing Playa.

I stayed in MVC’s Marbella a few years ago. I think a few days there is okay but not a good staging point for Spain. I went to Madrid, Sevilla, Marbella and Barcelona. That was an easy trip by train and I felt I got a lot of variety with this itinerary. Sevilla was my favorite city. I did a day trip to Morocco but that is not safe right now. That was quite interesting to me.

Would you recommend taking the train or flying back to Madrid from the Marriott?
Our return flight is Madrid
Try Iryo & Ouigo to see if either of them go from Malaga to Madrid, both are usually very good prices with high speed train and nicer in my opinion than Renfe (the traditional Spanish train company) or Air Europa is a good price for flying.
