Sound cancelling earphones

I need to purchase something that will eliminate the sound of extremely loud snoring and still allow me to sleep comfortably. This may strike some of you as funny, but I have had to stop travelling with a very dear friend because of the impossibility of getting any sleep. I considered the Bose headphones I've seen advertised, but the price is way out of my range. I wouldn't use them for listening to music, just for getting some peace and quiet. Help please!
 
There are many less expensive headsets, but all have a cord I'd be afraid of wrapping around something near and dear to me- my neck! -or poking myself in the eye with the plug :)

A couple of suggestions come to mind. Perhaps shooting (simply hard shell) ear protection. I'd find it difficult to sleep with these, though. How about a 'white noise' generator that sounds like a waterfall or stream or ocean breakers? Has your friend been checked for sleep apnea? Maybe a CPAP would eliminate the snoring. 'Course there's always separate bedrooms.

Try cheap foam earplugs (sold in drug stores), the kind you roll between your fingers and insert. They're very effective, but I don't know if you'll be able to sleep with them in place.
 
Tried those. They don't even come close to deafening the sound. I suspect most of us snore as we get older, but this is really unbelievable.
 
I dont see how you can sleep with the headphones on but its worth a try.

Go to a bose store and get their earphones, you can return them no questions asked within 30 days. I know because thats what I did. If they work and are too expensive for you get a panasonic hc500 or the audio technique. I bought both of them, one for me and one for my wife and all three were about the same. The panasonic was the least expensive @ $99 from JR electronics in NYC.
 
If you are using them to deaden sound, not listen to music, Home Depot- and other tool-type stores- have ear muffs that claim they will attenuate sound ~21db for under $20. Nothing is going to totally eliminate the sound of an extremely loud snorer beside you in a bedroom (or closer), but if you can sleep with them on your head, these will reduce the sound. They probably won't help your hairdo. The fancy electronic ones are tuned to electronically 'jam' certain frequencies- like those of a jet engine- and are less effective reducing other frequencies.

I don't like the foam earplugs as much as the rubbery (silicone?) ones that are like a series of circles - baffles? I think they're called earplanes.

My son has noise-canceling earphones with small silicone earbuds that work very well - but I'd be leery about sleeping with a wire.
 
Maybe you are looking for the wrong fix.

Maybe your travel companion has sleep apnea. If he/she will have a sleep study done(no big deal) it may result in that person getting a C-Pap machine. That way you both can sleep.
 
Another possibility is drugs!! I have a prescription for ambian. I take it as needed. I shared a room with a loud snorer on a recent fishing trip. Increasing the amount I took before bed helped me relax and get to sleep.

World's Finest Earplugs

I was also shopping for noise cancelling earphones because of my husband and our Pug's snoring. But the costs were awfully high and I wasn't sure I'd be able to sleep with them on my head.

I tried the foam earplugs but they didn't work for me. I did a bunch of research on earplugs and stumbled across this company. These earplugs work perfectly for me. They're like soft playdough (that doesn't come apart). They stay in your outer ear area, not your ear canal like foam ones, and they stay in place. I've been using them for 3 years now and I have no complaints at all. I don't hear the snoring, the storms in the night, the neighbor's barking dogs, etc. I do, however, hear the alarm clock so I can get up and go to work. :eek:

Well, drats Wendy. I thought you had found the perfect plugs until you said you could still hear the alarm clock! :hysterical:

Yes, they are reusable. I use them for a month or so, then they start to dry out and aren't as soft and pliable. I always buy the 12 pack, that lasts me over a year.

I hope they work for you as well as they have for me. I couldn't get any sleep and these things were like a miracle cure!
